Willard's Strayer earns SBC Bay first team

PORT CLINTON — Three singles players and one doubles team from Edison and Willard landed spots on the All-SBC first and second teams on Saturday at the individual league tournament held at the Hablitzel Von Thron Tennis Complex at Port Clinton High School. Willard's Alex Strayer was the individual champion at third singles, while teammate Cam Robinson placed third at first singles to earn second team. The Willard first doubles team of Braydon Thompson and Masyn Johnson also finished in third place to land a spot on the second team, as did Edison's Parker Campbell at first singles. Strayer opened with a win over St. Mary Central Catholic's Joey Faber (6-1, 6-1), followed by two more sets over Tiffin Calvert's Brad Wellman (6-1, 6-4). In the finals, he won by the same score (6-1, 6-4) over Huron's Nick Walls. Robinson defeated Oak Harbor's Danny Tack (6-2, 6-2) before he fell to Huron's top-seeded Mason Schindley (6-4, 6-3). Thompson and Johnson beat Calvert's Gavin Wagner and Xavier Kimmett (6-4, 6-4), then fell to Huron's Nolan Stockard and Jason Lenczyk in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 10-6. For Edison, Campbell beat Calvert's Kevin Ardner (6-0, 6-3), then fell to Port Clinton's Owen Auxter (6-0, 6-0). Willard's Levi Schag was honorable mention (third place) at second singles. The second doubles team of Cullen Hill and Braylon Long was also third to earn honorable mention. Edison's Noah Proctor and Jonah Main also each placed third at second and third singles to earn honorable mention honors. Edison is scheduled to visit Tiffin Calvert in a league match on Monday. Willard is scheduled to host Port Clinton on Tuesday. TRACK AND FIELD Willard competes at 9-10 Relays SHELBY — The Willard track and field program competed at the Shelby freshman-sophomore relays event on Saturday. Taylor Biddinger placed second for the Crimson Flashes in the 1600-meter run in 5:09, while teammate Grant Shaarda was second in the long jump (17-feet-9.5 inches). The 4x100 relay of Melvyn Martinez, Jackson Beamer, Harry Meisner and Shaarda finished fourth in 49.6 seconds. For the Willard girls, Cerlyr Matos Beverhound placed third in the 100 hurdles (18.4) and fourth in the 300 hurdles (1:00.4). Claire Bilger finished third in the high jump (4-feet-4) and Emie Buurma was fourth in the discus (85-feet-3.5). Also for the Flashes, the 4x100 relay of Kaydee Kilgore, Kelsey Lykins, Quinn Wicker and Cora Clark placed second in 56.7 seconds. The 4x200 of Bilger, Juliana Valadez, Wicker and Clark finished third (2:00.9).
