Popular local umpire killed in two-vehicle crash

GROTON TWP. — The Sandusky Post of The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle crash that occurred at 1:31 p.m. Friday, April 14, on Mason Road at the intersection of Bardshar Road in Groton Township. Danny Sullivan, 68, of Castalia, was driving a green and white 1976 MB Classic Car, east bound on Mason Road. Dominic Deblase, 31, of Sandusky, was driving a red 2019 Ford F150 south bound on Bardshar Road. Deblase's Ford Pickup failed to stop at the stop sign and entered the intersection striking the MB. Both vehicles came to rest in a ditch on the south side of the road at the intersection. Sullivan, a popular local high school softball umpire, was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash. He died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. Deblase was wearing a safety belt and received possible injuries. He was treated at the scene by Groton Township Fire and Rescue. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash. The crash remains under investigation. The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted by Erie County Sheriff's Office, Groton Township Fire and Rescue, Margaretta Township Fire and EMS, Foster's Towing, Erie County Coroner.
