It's time for people to 'Smash the Box'

NORWALK — If all you see is the disability, you will miss out on ... • Courageous • Authentic • Brilliant • Loving • Resilient • Unique • Exceptional • Artistic • Capable • Loyal • Sincere • Talented • Mighty • Leader • Original The Huron County Board of Developmental Disabilities hosted its 2023 DD Awareness Community Breakfast on Wednesday, putting a focus on its people. The mission of the organization is "To inspire people with developmental disabilities to contribute to the communities that are important to them, and to achieve the life they want." The organization's vision is "to strengthen and support the lives of people with developmental disabilities." Guest speaker was Chad Willet, author of the book "Smash the Box." Willet encouraged people to be aware of what is around them. Get off your phone, he said. Connect with your surroundings. "The box is our mindset," Willet said. "The way you and I think. Every day is the box. It does not matter someone's age, title, description. ... It means nothing. Smashing the box is a mindset. Many people get stuck in their head. They live up here. They live in the past. "Cell phone addiction now is getting worse and worse ... that is what we want to get out of in Smash the Box." And when you get out of that box and look around, there is a lot to see in those with developmental disabilities. Huron County commissioner Harry Brady read a proclamation in honor of the event, while superintendent Kari Smith thanked everybody for coming out and supporting the organization.
