Recreation Park updates could exceed $3.5 million

NEW LONDON — As property owners know, most structures require upkeep and/or updating from time to time, and at a recent New London Local Schools board of education meeting board members discussed what needs to be done to the football field and track. According to a report presented to the board, everything at the field needs replacing or updating, including the bleachers, track surface, lighting, restrooms, locker rooms and more. The question arose about building the facility on school land instead of spending money on an aging one at the Recreation Park. Superintendent Brad Romano said the cost of upgrading the existing facility would exceed $3.5 million, while building a new one would cost more than $4.5 million. A conversation of how to pay for either of these options ended the discussion, which will remain on the agenda for future meetings. The board accepted the resignation of cafeteria worker Carey Anderson, effective June 30, and the retirement of intervention specialist Cathey Daly, effective Aug. 31. Several routine items were approved, as well the list of 60 graduating seniors, several board policies and a contract with Damschroder Roofing for repairs this summer. A representative from the Ohio auditor's office presented the board, treasurer and superintendent with an award for a quality audit. She said out of the more than 6,000 entities audited by the state each year, only 8 percent received this commendation.
