Edison's Hermes wins fourth SBC title

NORWALK — Edison standout wrestler Max Hermes won his fourth individual Sandusky Bay Conference championship on Saturday at Norwalk High School. An NCAA Division I Rutgers recruit, Hermes tallied four wins en route to winning the 126-pound weight class, which also earned him Most Outstanding Wrestler in the Bay Division. A defending state champion, Hermes is the 15th four-time SBC champion in conference history. He is the top-ranked wrestler at 120 pounds according to the latest borofanohio.net rankings. Hermes will take a 41-3 record into the Division III sectional tournament in Plymouth. he pinned Willard's Brayden Sykes (2:27), Fremont St. Joseph's Ethan Mariscal (3:02) and Vermilion's Kreston Shaw (2:57) prior to pinning Lakota's Lane Thacker in 3:39 in the finals. Max's younger brother, Abe, finished in first at 113, scoring a 10-1 major decision against Oak Harbor's Bodee Miller in the finals. Abe, a sophomore, who won his second SBC title, is 18-1 after missing a large chunk of the season with an injury. He is third in the state rankings. Abe Hermes had a bye, then pinned St. Mary Central Catholic's Grant Swain (57 seconds) before a technical fall win over Perkins' Sawyer Smith (22-6) prior to the finals. Also for the Chargers, which finished sixth overall and and third among Bay teams, Kohen Horvath was also an individual champion at 150. Ranked No. 2 in his weight in the state list, Horvath (35-4) pinned Columbian's Vaughn Zimmerman (2:27) and Vermilion's Owen Kyser (2:43) before getting an injury default in the finals over Bellevue's Clay Alley. In a huge showdown at 144, Edison junior Marcus Medina (No. 1, Div. III) fell to Clyde's Lance Overmyer (No. 2, Div. II) by a 5-0 decision. Medina (33-5) started the tournament with a pin in 2:40 over Norwal's Brady Case. He pinned Bellevue's Grant Woodruff in 2:42, then did the same in 4:55 to Lakota's Cody Biddle before falling to Overmyer (45-1). Also for the Chargers, Quintin Cox (120) was seventh and Kyler Jones (106) was eighth. Norwalk places eight The host Truckers were led by junior Ryan Fox in fourth place at 175 pounds on Saturday. Fox (32-11) pinned Huron's Ben Davis (1:16) and Sandusky's Braden Sartor (3:15) before losing a close 5-4 decision to Oak Harbor's Broch Mansor in the semifinals. He then fell in the third-place match to Lakota's Gabe Garlick, 7-0. Earning fifth for the Truckers was Austin Ware (29-11) at 126 pounds. Jackson James placed sixth at 120. At 106, Aldynn Metzger (19-11) was seventh, as was Gavin Lepley (22-18) at 132. Nico Helton (157), Gabe Pearce (190) and Brendon Gross (285) each placed eighth for the Truckers. Figueroa second for Flashes Willard freshman Jose Figueroa reached the finals at 106 pounds, where he was pinned in 1:08 by Perkins' Marco Muratori (35-11). Figueroa (21-9) beat Port Clinton's Elijah Ramsey with a 13-5 major decision, then followed with a 13-0 major decision over Norwalk's Metzger.
