County tax collection hits another record

NORWALK — Another month and another record for Huron County sales tax collection. The February report, released by Auditor Roland Tkach, showed the county's portion at $1,097,685. "Sales tax collection is full-steam ahead in the these first two months of the year," the auditor said. "I'm very pleased with this report and remain cautiously optimistic." Sales tax collection is already 6 percent more than the estimate through two months. "That's how we like to see it," Tkach said. The February report reflected November sales. Sales tax collection makes up about 63 percent of the county's general fund revenue in a typical year. "Shopping local makes such a big difference," the auditor said. "Plus, Internet and vehicle sales were really strong this month." Internet sales checked in at 22 percent while vehicle sales were at 23 percent. Mom-and-Pop stores accounted for 24 percent of the total and big-box stores added 25 percent. Liquor sales were up about 10 percent compared to 2022. "These numbers are solid," the auditor said. "Hopefully, this positive trend continues." Tkach released the casino fund report for Jan. 31 which was also a record for the quarter. The county's portion was $198,032. "We'll continue to monitor all the county's financial numbers," Tkach said.
