South Central tops Plymouth for fourth straight win

GREENWICH — The South Central boys basketball team won its fourth straight game on Saturday to inch back above the .500 mark with a 49-45 victory over visiting Plymouth in Firelands Conference play. The Trojans — who lost five straight games from Dec. 10-Jan. 3 — improved to 7-6 overall and 4-4 in the FC with the win. Plymouth fell to 2-11 (2-7). South Central led 15-10 after one quarter and 27-22 at halftime. The Big Red clawed back in it with a 17-13 edge in the third quarter to pull within 40-39, but the Trojans held them off in the fourth quarter with a 9-6 advantage. Isaac Blair scored 27 points for the second straight game for South Central. He also added 12 rebounds for a double-double. Brandon Michell added six points and 10 rebounds, while Hayden Dobias scored nine points and Gunner Gray grabbed six rebounds. South Central will host St. Paul (7-4, 5-2) in a rescheduled game from Dec. 23 on Tuesday. Plymouth, which got eight points from Gavin Bishop and Layne Bushey, will visit Monroeville on Friday. Mapleton 53, Monroeville 50 MONROEVILLE — The Mounties edged the host Eagles by one possession in a FC matchup on Saturday to claim both matchups this season. Monroeville fell behind 13-4 after one quarter in the loss, but rallied to take a 1-point lead into the fourth quarter before falling. Aidan Goodwin scored 28 points to pace the Eagles, who also got 14 from Braden Chapman and seven from Jimmy Clingman. Mapleton (6-6, 5-4) beat the Eagles (7-6, 6-3) at home, 64-56, on Dec. 9. Monroeville hosts Plymouth on Friday before visiting Lakota (1-11) on Saturday next week. Crestview improved to 12-0 overall and 7-0 in the FC with the win, while Western fell to 6-7 (4-5 FC). Western trailed 14-6 after one quarter and 28-16 at halftime. The Cougars then removed all doubt with a 20-4 scoring advantage in the third quarter. Hayden Keith scored 10 points and had seven rebounds, three assists and three steals for the 'Riders. He was followed by Braxton Balog with seven and Caleb Pausch with six. The Roughriders visit St. Paul on Friday and Edison on Saturday. Keystone 72, Edison 49 MILAN — The Chargers were steadily outscored in each of the four quarters of Saturday's non-league loss to the Wildcats. For Edison (2-10), Kayden Bourget scored 17 points. Troy Rutherford added 11 points and Luke Blatnik scored nine. Edison is at Bellevue (9-3) on Tuesday.
