Logan Stieber announces retirement from wrestling

COLUMBUS — The most accomplished wrestler in Ohio history has called it a career.Logan Stieber, a 2010 Monroeville graduate, announced on Monday he has retired from competitive wrestling. The legendary Ohio State and Monroeville wrestler will become a coach at the Ohio Regional Training Center in Columbus, where he will assist freestyle wrestlers in their training for World championships and the Olympic Games.He also plans to open a wrestling academy sometime in the future.Stieber finished his career as a four-time OHSAA state champion, a four-time NCAA champion and a World champion."I plan on helping our Olympic-level athletes make World teams and win World and Olympic medals," Stieber said in a video released by Ohio State wrestling on Wednesday. "I've always enjoyed being around the elite guys who really want to be great."Our RTC has shown in the last 10 years that we have best guys in the country post-collegiately training with us," he added. "I'm very excited to help them. I've wrestled all over the world on the biggest stages, so I think my experience will be able to help our guys take the next step."At Monroeville, Stieber was 184-1 with four state championships. Along with his brother, Hunter, and Cam Tessari and Chris Phillips, the quartet led the Eagles to the state team championship in Division III in 2010 and state runners-up in 2009. Logan won a state record 179 straight matches in high school.The dominance continued at Ohio State for Stieber, who finished 119-3 in his four seasons for the Buckeyes. He won NCAA titles at 133 points in 2012 and 2013, and two more titles at 141 pounds in 2014 and 2015.He is one of four wrestlers in the 89-year history of the NCAA championships to win four individual championships. As a senior in 2015, Stieber also helped the Buckeyes to their only NCAA team championship as well."At Ohio State, we've had the best training partners and coaches the entire time I was there," Stieber said. "It's something that when I was in high school, I was looking for something like that, so I could continue to have elite training partners and coaches. At Ohio State, they prepared me in a way no other area could."Upon graduation, Stieber promptly made the 2016 World team at 61kg (134 pounds) and won gold in a non-Olympic weight championship bracket.Stieber also made the 2017 and 2018 World teams. Last May, he won the Pan-Am championships after earning a bronze at the event in 2017."I wanted to be the best wrestler I could be," Stieber said. "I thought I could do really well. You always dream of winning NCAA titles, and it's everyone's goal to win four.
