Eagle wrestlers impressive in front of home fans

MONROEVILLE — There weren't a lot of matches, but it didn't matter for the fans of Monroeville and St. Paul high schools. The Eagles hosted the Flyers and St. Mary's Tuesday afternoon in a wrestling tri-match in front a big crowd inside the Monroeville Athletic Complex. While the Eagle fans were right at home, the Flyer students took buses to the match. "It was a fun thing to do for the students," Monroeville athletic director Ben Paul said. "This gives the students a chance to see a match, and the wrestlers to compete in front of a big crowd." In the end, it wasn't much of a match as St. Paul had just four wrestlers and St. Mary Central Catholic brought two. But that didn't matter to the fans, who cheered their wrestlers on in every match. The Eagles got walk-over wins in seven of the matches. After the match, students from both schools — on the final day before Christmas break — gathered on the mats for a group photo. Monroeville will send several wrestlers to the prestigious Brecksville Holiday tournament on Dec. 29-30, while St. Paul heads to to the Defiance Invitational over the same two days.
