Democratic Party hosting essay contest

NORWALK — The Huron County Democratic Party is sponsoring an essay contest, the winner of which will receive a scholarship of $2,500. The contest is open to any 2023 Huron County graduating senior, whether enrolled in a public or private school, completing the GED, or home schooled. The scholarship amount will be paid directly to the institution of the student's choice, whether an academic college or university, professional training trade program or professional licensing institution. For-profit institutions will be considered on a case-by-case basis. There will be a scholarship award presentation at the student's awards night. The essay topic is "What is gerrymandering and how is it affecting our politics today?" There are several questions to be considered. Contestants will write a double-spaced essay of between 600 and 750 words. The full application form is available through the student's high school guidance counselor or by going on line to hurondems.org. The deadline to submit the application and essay is April 14, 2023. The essays will be judged blind. The judges will not know the name, gender or school of the essay writer. The winning essay will be offered to local newspapers for publication, and posted at hurondems.org. The student will be asked to record a reading of the essay as well. The organizers want to encourage broader thinking and participation among young people in the democratic process, learning how government functions, vetting candidates, and voting in local, state and federal elections. Last year, Megan Lindenberger of Plymouth High School won this scholarship. The Huron County Democratic Party Scholarship Program is a 501(c)(3) entity. Anyone wishing to make a tax-deductible contribution to the scholarship program can find details online at hurondems.org/donate.
