Edison routs New London in season opener

NEW LONDON — The Edison boys basketball team opened its season with a dominant win on the road, defeating host New London by a 56-24 score in the annual non-league matchup between the two teams. Edison led 14-6 after one quarter, but put the game on ice with a 27-4 scoring advantage in the second quarter to give them a 41-10 halftime lead. The Chargers were led by 13 points from freshman Bryson Wittmer, who scored five times inside the arc and three times at the foul line. Davin Wendt scored 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Kayden Bourget and Luke Blatnik each added eight points. New London was led by nine points from Steven Justavick. Conner Byrd added six points.Edison is off until Dec. 2 when it visits SBC Bay rival Huron. The Wildcats hosted Wellington on Saturday, and will entertain Monroeville on Thursday. Seneca East proceeded to outscore the Eagles 18-15 in the fourth quarter — capped by two free throws by Lucas Mason with 2.3 seconds left — to close out a narrow victory to open the season. Aidan Goodwin connected on three 3-pointers to score a team-high 18 points for the Eagles. He was closely followed by Gabe Howell with 17 points and Jimmy Clingman with 14 points.
