Seven on first team; Livengood Coach of the Year in Div. VII NW district

FINDLAY — Seven Firelands Conference players from South Central and St. Paul were selected to the Northwest District first team in Division VII, the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association announced Wednesday night. In addition, five more FC standouts for the Flyers, Trojans and Plymouth earned spots on the second team, while two coaches with area ties earned Coach of the Year honors for the district — which makes up 40 percent of all of Division VII statewide. Earning first team honors for St. Paul (8-4, 5-1) included seniors Quincey Crabbs, Chase Rospert, Logan Risner, and AJ and Andy Meyer. For South Central, senior receiver Isaac Blair and senior linebacker Braden Kiesel were first team. In 12 games at running back this season, Crabbs ran 271 times for 2,122 yards (7.8-yard average) and 25 touchdowns. With a touchdown catch, fumble return and eight 2-point conversion runs, Crabbs totaled 178 points (14.8 per game) this season. As one of 13 All-Ohio running backs since 1992, Crabbs became just the fourth player in program history to reach 2,000 yards. He joined Dan Pugh (2,368, 1997), Jason Pugh (2,008, 1999) and Brad Smith (2,006, 2014). However, Crabbs was by far the quickest to the milestone. He reached 2,000 yards in his 11th game, compared to the 13th game for Dan Pugh, who remains the single-season (and career) rushing leader for the Flyers. Crabbs also ran for 408 yards and 4 TDs in an Oct. 7 win at Edon, which is not only a program record, but the 60th reported 400-yard game in OHSAA history. A center, Rospert helped the Flyers rush for 329.2 yards per game and 51 TDs on the ground in 12 games. Risner finished 45 tackles and seven sacks on the defensive line. At linebacker, Andy Meyer totaled 113 tackles (13 for loss) with two fumble recoveries and seven pass breakups. AJ Meyer finished with 100 tackles, four interceptions, 11 pass breakups and a fumble recovery at safety. Blair caught 92 passes for 1,153 yards and 19 TDs for South Central. He also broke records for catches, yards and TDs in a season, while the 92 catches is unofficially 32nd all-time in OHSAA history, and the 19 TDs are tied for 23rd in Ohio history. Kiesel was first team at linebacker after he finished with 129 tackles (7 TFL), 1.5 sacks and three fumble recoveries. St. Paul head coach John Livengood, Antwerp coach Jason Hale, and Waynesfiled-Goshen coach Shane Wireman shared the Coach of the Year honors. In his 32nd season at the school, Livengood reached the 300-win mark in a 60-52 win at Edon on Oct. 7. With that, he unofficially became the 17th coach in OHSAA history to reach the milestone, and owns the fourth-best winning percentage (.789) among 300-game winners. This season, the Flyers were 0-2 for the first time in 24 years before winning seven of their next eight games to reach the second round of the playoffs. Hale, a 2006 South Central graduate, was 0-10 in his first season at Antwerp. But the Archers were 9-3 last season and are 13-0 entering this weekend's regional championship game vs. Lima Central Catholic. South Central quarterback Brandon Mitchell (2,089 yards, 27 TDs) was second team, as was St. Paul junior running back Ben Burger (1,398 yards, 19 TDs). Earning second team was also the Plymouth senior trio of offensive lineman Colton Sparks, defensive back Shae Sparks, and punter Caiden Allen. Honorable mention selections for the Big Red included Trace McVey and Layne Bushey. Other area honorable mention choices included the Monroeville trio of Evan Benfer, Blake Schaub and Peyton Barnhart; and South Central's Hagen Adams, Brandon Smith and Gage Lauderman.
