St. Paul, Norwalk junior high teams win league matches

PLYMOUTH — The St. Paul junior high volleyball teams won a pair of Firelands Conference matches on Oct. 6 and Monday night. On Monday, the Flyers traveled to Plymouth, as the seventh-grade team won in three sets, 19-25, 25-16 and 25-19. Ryleigh Mansfield Bush was 11 for 12 serving with five aces and Mia Mutchler was 10 for 10 serving with five aces for St. Paul. Brooklyn Cassidy had seven kills and Piper Hipp had four, while Layla Fair finished with nine assists and Elsie Shumaker added three. The eighth-grade team won in two sets over the Big Red, 25-13, 25-11. Annie Friend was 11 for 11 serving with two aces and had four assists, while Sydney Wurzel was 8 for 8 serving with six aces, and Kate Stieber was 7 for 7 serving with one ace. Ella Kalizewski had four kills and Abby Cloud and Aubrie Bogard each had two, while Kalizewski also had four assists. On Oct. 6, the seventh-grade team won at home against South Central with a pair of 25-23 sets. Cassidy was 8 for 8 serving with four aces and had five kills, while Mansfield Bush was 13 for 13 serving with five aces and Mutchler was 4 for 4 with an ace. Jess Matlack added two kills and Shumaker had six assists. St. Paul also beat South Central in the eighth-grade match, 25-12 and 25-17. Sarah Gocsik was 8 for 8 with an ace, while Cloud was 7 for 7 with an ace and Kalizewski was 7 for 7 with three aces. Kalizewski also added four kills and six assists, while Bogard and Ally Talbot each had two kills and Friend had four assists. Norwalk teams top Vermilion VERMILION — The Norwalk Middle School volleyball teams came away with road wins over host Vermilion Monday night in SBC Lake Division action. The seventh grade team (11-4, 7-3) posted scores of 26-24 and 25-16. Maddie Gamble was 16 for 16 serving with seven aces, followed by Libby Lark (5 for 5), Saige Viock (3 for 3), Payton Preston (6 for 6, ace) and Piper Richardson (3 for 3). Gamble was also 20-of-23 hitting with seven kills, and Ainslee King was 15-of-18 with five kills. Kenadee Lesch, Nellie Ferguson and Gamble led the team in digs. The eighth-grade team (11-4, 7-3) also beat the Sailors, in three sets, 25-10, 23-25, 25-22. C.J. Bennett was 12 for 12 serving with four aces, followed by Sawyer Wineman at 11 for 12 serving with two aces, Emily Tyler 8 for 9, Riley Helton 6 for 6 (two aces), Cadence Esker 6 for 6 (one ace) and Emma Gebhardt at 5 for 6. Esker finished with two kills, while Wineman and Helton totaled 20 and 10 digs, respectively. "I would like to give a special shoutout to both Maddie Gamble and Ainslee King," eighth-grade coach Kelsey King said. "They were both pulled at the conclusion of their seventh grade game and were told they needed to warm up with us because they would be playing since we were missing a few players. "They were both given a large task, but played fantastically. I could not be more thankful and grateful for two players who are willing to rise to the occasion." Norwalk is at Bellevue on Wednesday to close out the regular season.
