Norwalk ties for fourth at SBC Lake tournament

FREMONT — The Norwalk boys golf team shot a 353 to finish tied for fourth on Thursday at the SBC Lake Division championships, hosted by the Fremont Country Club. Tiffin Columbian had the lowest score with a 33, followed by Bellevue (338), Clyde (339), Vermilion (353) and Perkins (380). The Truckers were led by Avery Scheel and Bray Malson, who each shot an 85, which was good to finish tied for the ninth-lowest score among individuals at the tournament. Bryan Sommers added a 90 and Spencer Shutt added a 93. Clyde senior Mason Gurney won a playoff hole over Vermilion's Jack Plas (78) to win Lake Division medalist honors and clinch Player of the Year honors in the division. In the Bay Division, Huron won the title with a 338. Margaretta was next with a 346, followed by Oak Harbor (348), Willard (358), Port Clinton (400) and Edison (420). Dylan Thompson was tops for Willard with an 84, while Max Dawson had an 88. SBC teams will compete in sectional play next Thursday. The 14-team Division II event will be held at Woussickett Golf Course south of Sandusky while the 12-team Div. III tourney will be held at Green Hills in Clyde. VOLLEYBALL Monroeville 3, New London 0 NEW LONDON — The state-ranked Eagles improved to 10-2 overall and 8-0 in the FC with Thursday's sweep over the host Wildcats. The Eagles won, 25-11, 25-15 and 25-11. Maddie Daniel finished with 16 kills, followed by Madison Rieber and Alexa Adams with six, and Ady Adams with five. Madi Clark was 26 for 26 serving with four aces, and also added 28 assists and 15 digs. Also for Monroeville, Abbi Poths was 15 for 16 serving with three aces and 11 digs, and Lilly White had 25 digs. For New London (7-7, 4-4), Sasha Bowens had six kills and Emilee Rowland had four. Madison Rowland served five points, while Gracie Thomas had nine assists and 10 digs, and Jocelyn Speicher had 10 digs. In junior varsity action, Monroeville (10-1, 7-0) won, 25-20, 25-23. Western Reserve 3, Plymouth 0 PLYMOUTH — The Roughriders improved to 10-4 overall and 7-1 in the FC with Thursday's sweep of the Big Red. Western won with scores of 25-13, 25-13 and 25-10. Libby Weisenberger had eight kills and Emma Hammond added six for Western, which also got nine points each from Hammond and Jordan Feaga. Payton Friend and Feaga each had 15 digs, while Jamie Muenz was 93-of-94 setting with 34 assists. Western will host Shelby on Monday. St. Paul 3, Crestview 0 OLIVESBURG — St. Paul scored a road sweep over the host Cougars to pick up another FC win on Thursday. The Flyers (7-5, 6-2) posted scores of 25-22, 25-13 and 25-13. St. Paul hosts New London on Tuesday. South Central 3, Mapleton 1 ORANGE TWP. — The Trojans topped the Mounties in four sets for an FC win on Thursday. South Central (7-6, 4-4) won with scores of 20-25, 25-11, 25-22 and 25-7. Angela Williams finished with 17 kills and Grace Lamoreaux had nine for the Trojans, while Carlie Osborn had 17 assists and Mya Gahring added 16. Kendyl Beverly finished with 16 digs, while Lauren Williams had 13 and Lydia Chaffee had 11. Bellevue 3, Norwalk 1 NORWALK — The Truckers fell to 3-11 overall and 1-6 in the SBC Lake Division with Thursday's home loss to the Lady Red. Bellevue posted scores of 21-25, 25-12, 27-25 and 25-11. Norwalk will host Tiffin Columbian on Tuesday. Willard 3, Margaretta 1 CASTALIA — The Crimson Flashes won a four-set thriller to improve to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in the SBC Bay Division. Willard won with scores of 25-23, 25-23, 23-25 and 28-26. Kelsey Lykins finished with 17 kills, nine digs, and was 14 for 14 serving for the Flashes. Cassie Hamons was 19 for 19 serving with three aces, six kills, 23 assists and 13 digs. Also for Willard, Morgan Lofland was 20 for 20 serving with four aces, and Natalie Frye was 9 for 9 with an ace. Camryn Wiers had six kills, while Syana Sivongsak had 13 digs and Addie Stephens added eight. Edison 3, Port Clinton 2 PORT CLINTON — The Chargers improved to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in the Bay with Thursday's five-set win over the Redskins. Edison won with scores of 25-11, 18-25, 25-26, 25-21 and 15-10. Ella Habeck finished with 12 kills and 16 digs for the Chargers, who also got 12 points, 15 assists and 18 digs from Natalie Leimeister. Kalli Quillen had nine kills, 15 assists and 18 digs, while Ellis Kramb had 26 digs, seven points and three aces. Also for Edison, Taylor Moore had 13 points, three aces and 21 digs; Olivia Wilson had seven kills and three blocks; Jorja Byington had 17 points and two aces; and Dana Preston had four kills. TENNIS Edison 5, Sandusky 0 MILAN — The Chargers swept the Blue Streaks on Thursday for a non-league victory. Alli Vogus won at first singles over Anissa Chopra (6-0, 6-0), and Ivy Kluding topped Marilyn Miller at second singles (6-0, 6-2). At third singles, Lilly Kreglow beat Olivia Hayberger (6-0, 6-1). At first doubles, Delaney Lococo and Brynleigh Dail beat Sophia Olson and Willow Schreck (6-1, 6-0). The second doubles team of Sara Gates and Keira Keoghan beat Janiya Daniel and Kira Hunter (6-1, 7-5). Edison will compete in the SBC Bay Division tournament on Saturday at Port Clinton, then will return there on Tuesday to face the Redskins in a league match. JUNIOR HIGH St. Paul sweeps Crestview NORWALK — The St. Paul seventh and eighth-grade volleyball teams defeated Ashland Crestview on Thursday in Firelands Conference play. The seventh-grade team won in two, 25-15 and 25-14. Brooklyn Cassidy and Jess Matlack each had two kills for the Flyers, while Ryleigh Mansfield-Bush and Elsie Shumacher were both 9 for 10 serving with four aces. Piper Hipp was 10 for 10 serving with three aces, while Layla Fair had four assists and Shumaker had three assists. The eighth-grade team posted scores of 25-17 and 25-22. Kennedy Frazee was 12 for 12 serving with two aces and had three kills, while Annie Friend was 8 for 9 serving with an ace and had 11 assists. Ella Kalizewski had nine kills and three assists, while Sydney Wurzel was 9 for 9 serving with an ace, and Avery Gibson had three kills.
