St. Paul volleyball sweeps South Central

NORWALK — The St. Paul volleyball team improved to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the Firelands Conference with Tuesday's sweep over visiting South Central inside Harvey Keller Gymnasium. The Flyers posted scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-17 as the Trojans fell to 6-4 (3-2). With the win, St. Paul stayed one loss in back of Monroeville (6-2, 5-0) and are tied with Western Reserve (5-3, 4-1) for second place. "I was definitely concerned with South Central coming in because they are a lot bigger up from this year," St. Paul coach Nancy Miller said. "Sarah (Hohler) does a great job with those kids and always puts a good team the floor. "I think we're seeing some improvements out of some of our kids, and I see some of their hard work starting to pay off — which is really nice." For St. Paul, Ella Wangler had 12 kills, served 10 points and added 16 digs. Kegney Stoll had 12 kills, Geralyn Mutchler had nine kills, and Kristin Matlack finished with 35 assists. Also for St. Paul, which has a huge non-conference test on Wednesday at Tiffin Calvert (10-1), Lilly Cuturic had 10 points and 23 digs. "We're starting to learn to move the ball around better," Miller said. "That was a good win for us tonight. Definitely still struggling with our consistency but it's coming along." New London 3, Crestview 0 OLIVESBURG — The Wildcats improved to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the FC with Tuesday's road win over the Cougars, 25-21, 25-20 and 25-16. For New London, Sasha Bowens had eight kills, 11 digs, and served 10 points with three aces. Emilee Rowland had 10 kills and 10 assists, while Gracie Thomas had six kills, 14 assists and 15 digs. Also for 'Cats, Pailee Wilson had nine kills, eight points and three aces, and Jocelyn Speicher added 12 digs. TENNIS Norwalk 5, Bellevue 0 NORWALK —The Truckers will get their big rematch after sweeping visiting Bellevue on Tuesday at the Middle School courts. With the win, Norwalk improved to 14-2 overall and 7-1 in the SBC Lake Division, which sets up a match for first place on Thursday against visiting Tiffin Columbian (13-1, 8-0). Columbian claimed a 4-1 win over Norwalk — seeking a fourth straight league title — on Aug. 17 in Tiffin. In Tuesday's win, Megan Miller defeated Dakota Lily at first singles (6-3, 6-0). Sidney Sage won at second singles over Cameron Beltran (6-0, 6-2), and Ana Osborn was victorious over Grace MacMichael at third singles (6-2, 6-0). Maya Phillips and Kendall Hammersmith beat Alondra Rita and Delinda Gore (6-2, 6-2) at first doubles. At second doubles, Kenzie Smith and Lauren Brown beat Kiley Shumway and Aaliyah Young (6-3, 6-0). In junior varsity play, Norwalk went 5-3. Winning for the Truckers included Shyla Gruhlke (6-4), Abby Mozina and Mia Chicotel (6-1), Alex Scott and Theo Harris (6-4), Madelyn Long and Grace Sorenson (6-1), and Mary Willis and Roxy Brummit (6-0). Also playing was Chloe Hazelwood (0-6), Lily McDuffie and Sarah Hart (1-6), and Vanessa Vazquez and Zoey Cooper (0-6). Willard 3, Edison 2 WILLARD — The Crimson Flashes moved a step closer to earning another share of the SBC Bay Division championship with Tuesday's win over Edison. For Willard (10-4, 8-0), Naomi Schag fell at first singles to Alli Vogus (6-0, 6-0), while Macey Robinson won at second singles over Lizzie Campbell (6-1, 6-0). At third singles, Belle Van Zoest beat Ivy Kluding (6-1, 6-3). Also for Willard, the first doubles team of Maelyn Shaarda and Moriah Slone beat Delaney Lococo and Brynleigh Dail (604, 6-0). At second doubles, Rebecca Honaker and Emily Danhoff lost to Sarah Gates and Keira Keoghan (7-6 (5), 6-1). Tol. St. Ursula 3, Norwalk 2 TOLEDO — The Truckers fell to 13-2 overall with Monday's narrow loss to St. Ursula in a Division I OTCA quarterfinal match. At first doubles, Megan Miller and Sidney Sage teamed up to win a three-set thriller over Kat Batey and Lilly O'Neill. After splitting the first two sets (6-3, 3-6), Sage and Miller won the third set 7-6 (8) to earn the win. At third singles, Kenzie Smith won for Norwalk over Lauren Miller (6-2, 6-2). At first and second singles, Ana Osborn and Lauren Brown lost to Marissa Patino (6-0, 6-0) and Meghan Barrow (6-0, 6-0). The second doubles team of Maya Phillips and Kendall Hammersmith lost in three sets, 6-1, 6-7 (1), 6-3. BOYS GOLF St. Paul 179, Mapleton 186 NORWALK — The Flyers topped visiting Mapleton for a Firelands Conference win on Tuesday at Eagle Creek golf course. For St. Paul, Owen Romell led the team with a 39. Nolan McCall was next with a 45 and Sam Scavuzzo shot a 47. Rounding out the lineup was Aiden Stang (48), Dan Schwan (50) and Tom Gocsik (56). GIRLS GOLF Edison 190, Vermilion 203 HURON — The Chargers defeated the Sailors on Tuesday. For Edison, Meredith Unger shot a 43, followed by Madison Butler (45), Mallory Meister (47) and Elena McCord (55). Huron 188, Norwalk 198 HURON — The Truckers were topped by 10 strokes in Tuesday's non-league matchup with the host Tigers. For Norwalk, Kilee Duncan led the team with a 44 and Katie Wolcott added a 44. Analiese King shot a 53 and Kennedy Leto added a 58.
