United Fund kicks off 2023 campaign

NORWALK — One half of a million dollars. Let that figure sink in. That is the goal this year of the Norwalk Area United Fund. "Dollar by dollar by dollar," executive director Carol Wheeler said. "This need wasn't there two or three years ago," board president Mike Moore said. "We need all of the help and support we can get. This is a very aggressive goal." "Our target is $500,000," board member and incoming president Denny Doughty said. "That's an incredible amount of money. The next couple of years will be tough ... we need new donors and new paths." This year's campaign is titled "A Stampede of Giving." Already things are off to a good start. Wheeler said 13 percent, or $64,000, has already had been pledged. "Thanks to our pillars for kick-starting our campaign," she said. Four special awards were handed out at Thursday morning's kick-off breakfast at the Norwalk Eagles Club. • John A Elmlinger "Extra Mile" Award: Susan Hazel This award recognizes an individual who goes the extra mile in their commitment to the Norwalk Area United Fund and its mission as well as our community. • Emerging Leader Award: Norwalk Arts Center This award honors upcoming leaders who have demonstrated a commitment to inspiring the next generation of leaders and strengthening the community. • Community Commitment Award: Kristen Cardone This award recognizes one's devotion to the service in the community through volunteerism and service. • Cornerstone Award: The late John Elmlinger This award applauds the past, present and future philanthropic encouragement throughout the community.
