Norwalk bus involved in two-vehicle accident

NORWALK — A Norwalk City Schools bus was involved in a two-vehicle accident at about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday on New State Road. When firefighters arrived they found the driver of the car unconscious. The vehicle had "moderate front-end damage to the car which was under riding the rear of the school bus," according to Capt. Charles Hillman's report. "Both vehicles were checked for hazards. Car was leaking antifreeze which was mitigated with oil dry. Car was secured and put in park and turned off. 545 crew assessed the driver and updated NCEMS when they arrived on scene. "528 crew checked the bus and determined there were two students, a driver and an aide — all of which reported no injuries. Crews remained on scene to assist with clean-up and fluid control." "The bus had just two kids on it," Norwalk Superintendent Brad Cooley said. "Everybody was safe, and school buses are like tanks. There was somebody who came from behind and did not slow down, according to a witness. What I heard was the person was unconscious at the time. Our aide who went back said when law enforcement arrived they (the driver) were able to get out and walk. "The bus driver said he felt something more than your breaks locking up. It wasn't our driver at fault ... the only person to see it was the woman waiting for her children to board the bus." "Anytime you get calls at these times ... we are very much concerned." Cooley said a second bus and a second driver were sent out to finish the run.
