Officer, deputy indicted

NEW LONDON — A Huron County deputy and New London officer were both indicted for their alleged roles in a June incident in the village. County sheriff's Deputy Noah R. Perry, 26, Elyria, was indicted for one count of trespass in a habitation, a fourth-degree felony. He was also indicted for two counts of assault and two counts of interfering with civil rights, all misdemeanors. New London Officer Brett E. Harrenton, 27, Spencer, Ohio, was indicted for two misdemeanor counts of assault. The charges stem from a June 17 incident in the first block of Westwood Drive. Police were called to a disturbance in which a man was allegedly banging on neighbors' doors and threatening to fight them. Perry and Harrenton repeatedly knocked on a resident's door in an attempt to speak with someone inside, according to a New London police report. A woman exited the home and asked why people were banging on her door at 4 a.m. Perry told the woman he needed to speak to the man inside the home. The woman re-entered the home, told Perry and Harrenton that it was her home and she was not going to help the officers, according to the report. She then attempted to shut the door, but Perry allegedly placed his foot in the door jamb and prevented the door from closing. After calling to the male in the residence several times to exit, Perry allegedly grabbed the woman's hands and pushed forward into the home. Once he got to the area where the man was, he let go of the woman and attempted to detain the man, according to the report. After a brief struggle with the man outside the residence, in which the man allegedly tried to sic his dogs on the officers, the man was shocked with a Taser and handcuffed. The woman allegedly followed the officers and screamed at them. Perry then allegedly detained her briefly before releasing her, according to the report. The man was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and obstruction. He was taken to Huron County Jail. On June 18, the woman came to the New London police station to file a complaint against Perry. She alleged Perry entered her residence illegally and injured her when she was shoved by Perry during the incident. The case file was turned over to an investigator from the Stark County Sheriff's Office on June 27. Both Perry and Harrenton are scheduled to be arraigned on September 22.
