Willard totals 713 yards and 77 points in rout of Big Red

WILLARD — What appeared to be an early track meet of offense became one-sided when backyard rivals Plymouth and Willard locked up Friday night. Leading 28-21 midway through the second quarter, the Crimson Flashes rolled on for another 49 points in a 77-35 win over the Big Red at Flashes Field. The two teams combined for 1,053 yards and 112 points in the game, which served as "Military Night" recognition for both neighboring communities. Through the first 16 minutes of the game, the teams traded a pair of touchdowns. Willard opened the game with a 4-yard scoring run by running back Austin Parsons at the 5:47 mark of the first quarter. The first of an impressive 11 straight extra points by Luis Antonio gave the Flashes the early 7-0 lead. The Big Red answered barely over a minute later. Quarterback Trace McVey scored on a 1-yard run, and the first of five PATs by Andrew Miller tied the game at 7-7 at the 4:21 mark of the first. Just 26 seconds later, however, Carson Hamons hauled in a 50-yard touchdown pass from Isaac Robinson for a 14-7 lead. But the Big Red then proceeded to drive down the field, capped by a 1-yard scoring run by Shae Sparks to tie the game at 14 with 8:24 left in the half. There were then four TDs scored in just over five minutes, and eight TDs for 56 points scored total in the quarter.. Cam Robinson caught a 48-yard TD from Isaac Robinson, then added a 57-yard scoring catch on Willard's next possession for a 28-14 lead with 4:33 left in the half. But just nine seconds later, Sparks was off to the races on a 49-yard scoring run for a 28-21 Plymouth deficit. Isaac Robinson found Cam Robinson for a third time in the half. A 9-yard TD pass and catch extended the lead to 35-21 with 2:54 left in the half. Just 19 seconds later, Plymouth's Flint Ratliff shook off a defender and turned in a 78-yard TD pass from McVey for a 35-28 deficit. But the Big Red drew no closer. Willard scored two more times in the half, as Parsons cored on runs of 1 and 3 yards, respectively, with 1:13 and nine seconds left in the second quarter — which gave his team a 49-28 lead. A 45-yard touchdown run by Layne Bushey less than two minutes into the third quarter brought Plymouth to within 49-35, but it was all Willard from there. The Flashes closed out the game with a 6-yard TD pass from Isaac Robinson to Carson Cinniger, two short scoring runs of 6 and 4 yards by Parsons; and lastly a 10-yard scoring pass from Harry Meisner to Levi Schag. Willard threw for 539 yards and ran for 174 to total 713 yards. Among the staggering numbers for the Crimson Flashes, Isaac Robinson was 26-of-36 passing for 529 yards with five touchdown passes, three that went to Cam Robinson, who hauled in eight catches for 180 yards. Also for Willard, Hamons caught five passes for 138 yards and a score, while Carson Wiers had six catches for 101 yards. Parsons ran 19 times for 78 yards and 5 TDs rushing. Shae Sparks ran 18 times for 124 yards and a pair of TDs for Plymouth, while QB Trace McVey was 5-of-11 passing for 103 yards and a pair of TDs as well. Willard is at Seneca East next Friday while Plymouth travels to Wellington.
