Truckers beat Little Giants 12-6

It didn't happen very often but on this weekend in 1922, a Saturday night game to be exact, Norwalk did beat the Little Giants, 12-6. The star of the game for the high school was Whitaker. (No first name in the story). None-the-less, Whitaker scored both Norwalk touchdowns. His first came in the opening quarter when Fremont coughed it up on its own 20 yard line. Whitaker scored from 10 yards out on the third play. Then in the third quarter, Norwalk again took advantage of another Fremont fumble. This time it was Hargraves who seized the opportunity, grabbing the fumble and returning it to the one yard line. Whitaker scored on the first play. Fremont got on the board with three minutes to go in the game. The Norwalk lineup included Westrick, Bowers, Preston, Kromer, Bilton, Betts, Hommerick, Cronin Whittaker, Hargraves and Cronin. Norwalk used no subs. Fremont used only two. Rafferty funeral The funeral for William Rafferty this morning at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Peru was said to be one of the largest in the history of the county. St. Alphonsus Pastor Rev. Hassenburg and Bellevue Pastor Fr. Terwood co-celebrated the Mass. The sermon by Terwood was one of the most eloquent ever heard. The pall bearers were members of the Bellevue K of C, Keough, Koechle, Bruggerman, Collins, Gerhardstein and Landon. Internment was in the parish cemetery. Mr. Rafferty met his death in a deplorable auto accident near Kimball Sunday night as did a passenger in the car, Mrs. A.P. Ruffing. Their car stalled on the Nickel Plate tracks north of Sandusky. The two families had gone from Bellevue to the Leo Hohler home in Peru for dinner and were on their way back, using a route through north Monroeville rather than the paved road to Bellevue. Critically hurt in the accident was Mr. Ruffing who seems to be improving in health despite the amputation of a foot as well as Mrs. Rafferty, the daughter of the Hohlers. Also showing marked improvement is an 8-month old child. Marsh smoke An area in the Willard Marsh continues to cause breathing problems for many folks. An area three miles long and a quarter-mile wide has caught fire and burning out of control despite the firefighting efforts of a number of firemen from the Willard Department. This particular area is composed of several feet of decayed vegetation which when hot enough, breaks out into flames and heats other areas enough to set them to smoke. It is this smoke that irritates the eyes of everyone it comes in contact with. Plows have again been brought to use, turning the decayed matter and smoothing it. Just how long the fire will continue depends on rain. Natural rain appears to be the only answer to dropping the temperature of the fire. Will Smith come to bat? Baseball fans, especially those in Milan — the hometown of Elmer Smith — hope that history repeats itself. Smith, a member of the New York Yankees, is a utility outfielder for the Bronx Bombers again this year. But two years ago he was a hero when he came off the bench as a pinch-hitter with the bases loaded and smacked a grand slam home run that broke the hearts of Brooklyn fans. Those witnessing the game on the Reflector-Herald outside scoreboard and the broadcast that goes with it can only hope they will hear, "Pinch-hitting for the Yankees, Elmer Smith." Local golfer gets a lesson The results weren't always favoring the Norwalk contingent in the twice-a-year match with Oberlin Country Club. When former pro Gary Wilkins was on the scene for Norwalk, few times did Oberlin manage a win. But, in 1922, it was a no-brainer. Using the format of three points to the winner, Oberlin waltzed home with a 28-5 victory. Copeland, Bebout and Cox were the only players securing points for the Country Club team. Horseshoe opens It cost $1,341,000 to build but it is the biggest football stadium in America, the Horseshoe at Ohio State University officially hosts it first game on Oct. 7. One of the Norwalk fans to have a ticket for the opening game against Ohio Wesleyan is Dr. H.D. Taylor, a graduate of the university and former member of the football team. At this point the stadium seats just 63,000. Barton is headliner Those college football fans who want to see home-town player Lane Barton play football at the college level can see him when he suits up for Kenyon on Saturday when it plays Oberlin. Rev. Gross has a handful of tickets. He will dole them out to interested parties. Wireless from London It's a long way from London, England, to Norwalk, Ohio but that's how far the wireless signal was sent forward by Norwalk wireless operator Lenore Willis. This particular broadcast, sent under the ocean by cable, was of a London opera singer. The timing of the broadcast was not beneficial for most Norwalkians, however. It came through at 15 minutes after midnight. Quotes for thought Stingy men are always poor. Face to face the truth comes out. A friend not in need is the best kind.
