Large Livestock Sale helps wrap up fair

NORWALK — The highlight of the Huron County Junior Fair for many of the exhibitors is the Large Livestock Sale, which took place Saturday morning of fair week. Don Sweeting and Roger Hunker served as the auctioneers, and the sale order of 348 lots included beef feeder, dairy cross feeder, dairy feeder, market hogs, carcass hogs, market beef, carcass cattle, dairy steer, dairy projects and market lambs. The bidders at the sale are usually businesses or individuals who want to help the exhibitors, as well as generate goodwill in the community. The youngsters receive not only the amount bid for each animal but also its market value, which reimburses them for the time, energy and money that have gone into the livestock. All the numbers in this article are bid prices only. The sale started with Morgan Neill's Grand Champion beef feeder selling for $1,200 and Tyler Neill's Reserve Champ selling for $1,000. Nash Feichtner's animal was 3rd Overall Champ, and Nash donated the over $45,000 in bids for the Feichtner Barn Fund in memory of his grandparents and brother Owen. The Grand Champ dairy cross feeder calf belonged to Hagen Adams and brought $1,300. The Reserve Champ also belonged to Hagen and brought $1,000. Addison Cushing owned the 3rd overall dairy cross feeder. Morgan Baxter's Grand Champ dairy feeder calf sold for $3,100 and Hagen Adams' Reserve Champ for $1,300. Addison Cushing's calf was named 3rd overall. Nash Feichtner's Grand Champ market hog brought $1,300 and Addyson Riley's Reserve Champ brought $1,500. Another of her hogs was 3rd overall. Taylor Scheid's Grand Champ carcass hog made a bid of $1,000 and Brynlee Porter's Reserve Champ made $800. Collin Martin's was 3rd overall. The Grand Champion market beef belonged to Mason Kinney and sold for $5,500. The auctioneer noted this beef was judged third overall at the state fair. The Reserve Champ was Sophia Clemons' and sold for $6,000. Ethan Brown's beef was 3rd overall. Wyatt's Wolery's beef carcass brought $1,000 and Tessa Campbell's brought $800. The price for Hagen Adams' Grand Champ dairy steer was $1,500, and the price for his Reserve Champ was $1,300. Morgan Baxter received 3rd overall. Eli Arp received $3,100 for his Dairy Supreme Champ and Junior Champ. The sale ended with market lambs. Blake Martin made $1,900 with his Grand Champ and Hayley Spoerr made $2,200 for her Reserve Champ. Emily Stevens received 3rd overall. Traditionally, the Agricultural Heritage auctions off a quilt during the sale. This year's quilt went for $800 and 10 percent of this was donated to the Junior Fair.
