Evans all charged up about the future of travel

NORWALK — Fill 'er up. With electricity. With gas going for about $5 a gallon, many people are turning to electric cars. And now, those people need a place to charge those cars when they are one the road. Norwalk's first electric charger has opened in front of Evans Funeral Home on East Main Street at the corner of Old State Road. John Evans, who owns the funeral home with his wife, Jennifer, talked about why he did it. "Milan Township put one in a few months ago," Evans said. "We started planning for this last year. If somebody has an electric vehicle they already have in their navigation system or an app where they can do tap-and-pay with their own credit card." Evans said the cost is 50 cents per kilowatt hour. Parking is free for three hours, and if one stays longer, they are charged $1 per hour. "Most people charge their cars at home ... I would say anywhere from $5 to $7," Evans said about the cost to charge your car at a charging station like his. Evans said their are three or four charging stations like this one in the Huron and Erie county areas, and near Sandusky you've got Tesla and superchargers. "About a year ago the interest was there," he said. "We don't have one (an electric car). How can we help? I look to the future of our families coming to town ... we are on a main area, East Main Street, Route 61. "People can easily stop by, pull in for a brief time, charge their batteries on their way through town. First in town. It's never been done." Evans said you can charge two cars at a time and everything works off a telephone signal, not the internet or WiFi. "Not really a revenue generator, but it will cover its cost," Evans said. "Part of doing business."
