Mixed emotions with bombing of Japan

The entire free world had mixed emotions when the United States sent 100 B-29 Superfortresses over Japan and its islands for the fourth time in 24 hours. The area of Hiroshima was said to be incinerated and the worst was yet to come. That would come when the Enola Gay was loaded with the first atomic bomb was dropped on what was left of Hiroshima. A second bomb would drop on Nagasaki just days later, drops that immediately brought Japan to the table for peace negotiations. Stunned by the destruction of Hiroshima, Japanese leaders immediately cited violations of the Hague Law, the bombing of a helpless city. The U.S. responded by citing the city was a major quartermaster depot. What was certain was the U.S. would not be losing an anticipated 10,000 servicemen had it not taken the major step of invading the Japanese mainland. An accompanying story in the Aug. 8, 1945 Reflector-Herald made mention that older males would be inducted by draft if the war did not end soon. The dropping of the bomb made that unnecessary. The Norwalk Elks lineup included Swicker, Antrim, Schild, H. Sweet, D. Sweet, McConkey, Wilhelm and Conry. Greenwich countered with the lineup of Sparks, H. DeWitt, E. DeWitt, Wolfe, Kilgore, Momeyer, McElwee, Wilson, and pitchers Hammond, Miller and Smith. Oscary qualifys for Ohio Open Norwalk Golf Club professional Andy Moscary was one of just five players to play Findlay Golf Club in par or better going into the final round of the 1945 Ohio Open. The tournament leader was Pfc. Jim Milward from Madison,Wisc., the latter stationed at Lockboune Air Base. He played the course in 3-under for 36 holes. Moscary was in at even par. Moscary would eventually get a top-10 finish. Japan surrenders It took less than 24 hours after the bomb was dropped for Japan to come to its senses and accept the terms of surrender. The bomb dropped on the 8th and Japan made the announcement on the 10th of August in 1945.
