Schock 'shocks' his opponent in race for mayor

In what was supposed to be a Republican town, Cort Schock, a Democrat, was just that as he "shocked" his Republican opponent, H.C. Schwartz, by 273 votes in race for Norwalk mayor in November of 1929. The vote was heavier than normal as 2,266 cast ballots. Others to get the nod included Frank Carpenter, J.R. Strutton and W.W. Lawrence for the school board and William McCrillis, W.H. Sattig and David James to the Norwalk Township trusteeship. C.E. Bowers was re-elected township clerk. The $475,000 Sewage Disposal Bond Issue carried, 1,631 to 418 while the three-mill Norwalk Levy won by 76 votes. Proving that every vote counts, Milan elected Harry Moore as its mayor. He won by a single vote over V.J. Keller, 125-124. Charles Willoughby was re-elected mayor of Willard. RED CAPS TAKE FIELD The Wakeman Red Caps continue to take ink in the Norwalk-Reflector. They have a big two-day schedule on tap for area fans — a Sunday game against arch-rival Spencer and then a Monday game against a solid Joppa Club. Burdette Aldrich is said to be the flashiest shortstop in the area. He originally started the season with the Red Caps but asked for and was given his release in order to play for his home-town team. Joppa has long been a thorn in the side of the Red Caps. They have an Ohio State starter by the name of Wassem on their starting team and he is said to be a wonder. The Caps say they will send them back home, wishing the game was not as long as nine innings. Meanwhile, the indoor ball tournament will be contested at Norwalk's Milan Avenue Grounds on Labor Day. The first game at 9:30 a.m. pits Rotary Printers against the American Legion. Game 2 will pit Keller News against the Darby Printers. There will be a championship game and a consolation game played in the afternoon. SNYDER TO COACH AT NEW LONDON Paul Snyder was a star athlete at Wooster College. It is hoped what he did as one of the best of the Scots will carry over at New London where he was announced as the new football coach. A guard in college, Snyder was voted to a spot on the mythical All-Ohio football team. He captained the football squad as a senior and also won "W's" as a member of the track team where he ran the hurdles and high jumped. He also played on the inter-class basketball team and was a captain of his squad his final year. Whatever Snyder relayed to his squad during the pre-season, they certainly took to heart as they man-handled Amherst in their first game, 47-0. A player by the name of Robertson (He must not have had a first name...not unusual) ran wild for the Wildcats in the Friday afternoon contest. HARNESS HORSE WINNERS Directmar, owned jointly by Greenwich-area residents H.H. Crum and a Mr. Gotham, took first money at the Coshocton County Fair yesterday. It was his fifth win on the fair circuit after several second place finishes. Owners say he is just getting faster and faster and soon will be among the best in the state. Meanwhile, Major Rose is putting money in the pockets of owner Harry Bedel of Norwalk. The promising pacer won at the Attica Fair in straight heats last week and has graduated to the mile track at Ft. Miami near Toledo where grand circuit races are to start next week. MILAN GATHERS FOR EDISON Milan turned out 200-citizens strong at the Golden Jubilee of Light celebration at the Methodist Church dining room. They gathered to pay homage to their favorite son, Thomas Edison. The dinner guests ate at a dinner prepared and served by the ladies of St. Anthony Catholic Church. At 8 p.m. they retired to the Milan Town Hall where they heard the broadcast from Dearborn, Mich., where the Wizard of Menio Park (Edison) was being honored by Henry Ford, Pres. Hoover and other national leaders. It was with genuine regret that the Milan man who put the dinner festivities together, Mayor Ralph Beare, could not attend. He took seriously ill earlier in the day and was bedridden. In seats of honor at the Milan dinner were many of the citizens who knew Edison as a boy. BAD NIGHTS FOR LOCALS It was said that Whitaker ran wild for Norwalk in its 12-0 loss to Sandusky but could no cross the goal line. The big problem for Norwalk came in the form of giant Blue Streak running-back Herman Gant. He scored both Sandusky touchdowns, the last one in the final quarter from 23 yards out and was equally imposing on defense where he consistently dragged down Norwalk runners. St. Paul also had a fine runner in Stoll but he could not get it done on his own as the Flyers lost a close 9-8 decision to Fostoria St. Wendelin at Whitney Field. The game was dead even with the exception of an extra point kicked by the Mohawks. Both teams had a touchdown and recorded a safety. Dunn, Aman, Roth, Kramer, Esker and Zurcher started on the line for the Flyers while Stoll, Frey, Wenzel and Reeder worked in the backfield. Norwalk would get in the win column the following week, shutting out Willard, 7-0. The Truckers had Schnerrer, Brown, Crist, Price Heil, Cunningham and Mead on the line and Dudley, Taylor, Whittaker and Beach in the backfield. Willard started Landis, William, Davis Lowe, Cox Weber and Houghton up front and Heffley, Creeley, Miller and West in the backfield. St. Paul had no better luck in its third game, losing this time to Clyde, 12-7. After losing to St. Wendelin and Tiffin Calvert in the first two games, the Fliers from the west proved to be one score better. Again Stoll carried the ball on two out of three plays but again he needed more help. St. Paul won the first down battle, 15-10.
