Gasoline is expensive, but so are other liquids

NORWALK — At $4 per gallon, gasoline prices have skyrocketed recently. Area gas stations are reporting gasoline prices around $3.99 per gallon, with diesel fuel at $4.89 per gallon and Cam 2 racing fuel at $8. Airports around the region are selling aviation fuel at $4.80 to $5.49 for 100-octane low lead aviation gasoline and $3.50 to $4.76 for Jet A. By comparison, the per-gallon price of other liquids many individuals purchase on a daily basis may be surprising, according to several online resources. Tap water from the city of Norwalk costs twice as much for those outside the city limits as inside. According to the city's website, those in the city limits pay $4.50 per month for using 1,000 gallons or less, or 90 cents per 100 gallons. Those outside the city limits pay $9 per month for 1,000 gallons, or $1.80 per 100 gallons. Local churches offer holy water for free, but holy water from the sacred source in Lourdes, France, goes for $230.91 on eBay. According to the website justice.com, the illegal narcotic Phencyclidine (PCP,) which is sold in bulk as a liquid, sells for around $8,000 per gallon in Los Angeles, and between $12,000 and $20,000 in New York City. Area coffee shops sell regular coffee for an average of $26.67 per gallon. The American Red Cross does not charge hospitals for human blood or other blood products, but Zen-Bio Inc.'s website lists prices that equate to, per-gallon, $4,426.56 for whole blood, and $2,629.64 for fresh frozen plasma. Other online sites were consulted and both metric and U.S. measurements of various sizes were converted to gallons for comparison. Sources included Bound Tree Medical, Drug Mart, Wal-Mart, Napa Auto Parts, Kroger, Macy's and shopliquor.com.
