'Retail sales remain strong'

NORWALK — Huron County sales tax collection continues its record-setting pace. The newest report, released by Auditor Roland Tkach, showed the county's portion at $1,028,755. These numbers, which reflected November sales, were a record the month. "That is about $68 million in retail sales," Tkach said. "Retail sales remain strong." The county is already 5 percent more than the estimate through two months of 2022. "It will be interesting to see what the public continues to do as far as spending," the auditor said. Mom-and-Pop stores accounted for 27 percent of the latest total, while big-box stores were at 25 percent. Internet sales made up 24 percent of the total and vehicles sales 19 percent. Liquor sales were down about 2 percent compared to the same month a year ago. Huron County also set a record as far as casino funds in the Jan. 31 report. The county received $195,800 which is the most it has ever received. The county receives casino funds four times per year, Jan. 31, April 30, July 31 and Oct. 31. "We'll keep a close eye on all these reports," Tkach said. "Hopefully, the positive trend continues."
