Norwalk falls at Sandusky; Willard routs Edison

SANDUSKY — Host Sandusky clinched an outright SBC Lake Division championship with a convincing 68-43 win over Norwalk Friday night. The Truckers took a 19-9 lead on a Caleb Sommers reverse layup in the first minute of the second quarter and they were looking like spoilers. Then the 3-pointers began falling for Sandusky. PJ Brown made two quick 3s and scored 10 of the Streaks' 21 points in the second quarter. Brown and Moore Jr. had a hand in every point during a 21-4 run that gave the Streaks (16-4, 11-1) a 30-23 lead when Brown went coast to coast and scored after one of Norwalk's eight turnovers in the quarter. Brown scored his 10 points in the run, DeMar Moore Jr. scored seven and added assists on baskets by Darrion Durham and Issiah Taylor. Norwalk (10-10, 5-6) regrouped with an Ian Minor 3 and Mason Gamble's lay-in just before the halftime buzzer to cut Sandusky's lead to 30-28. The Truckers got within 35-34 on an Ashton Coe drive to the basket with 5:20 left in the third quarter, but the Streaks again struck from deep to build a big lead. "We were right there in the middle of the third quarter and a they knocked down some 3s," Norwalk coach Steve Gray said. "We went through a period when we couldn't throw it in the ocean. "I thought we played hard, I thought we competed. With two minutes to go in the third quarter we were in great shape." Daylen Green did the most damage for Sandusky in the pivotal third quarter, making three 3-pointers. He led a balanced Sandusky attack with 14 points. Durham added six points and four of his 11 rebounds in the period. Threes by Green started and ended a 10-0 run to give the Streaks a 45-34 lead. The closest Norwalk would get the rest of the game was 47-38 on a Daniel Traczek bucket with 2:11 left in the third. The Truckers committed eight turnovers in the third quarter and had 24 for the game. Sandusky had eight. "We started rushing things and when Sandusky gets on a roll they're really, really good," said Gray, whose team lost in overtime to the Streaks a couple weeks ago in Norwalk. "They got on a roll and made some 3s and started high-diving and the game was over." The Streaks, who have won five conference championships in the last seven years, kept the pressure on during the fourth quarter and extended their lead. The party was punctuated by Alexander's breakaway dunk that gave the Streaks a 65-42 lead with 1:35 to play. Norwalk made just one field goal in a tough fourth quarter and must regroup for a game against undefeated Western Reserve (18-0) on Saturday night. Coe led the Truckers with 15 points. Minor had 10 and Parker Evans finished with six points and 11 rebounds. "One of our biggest problems is I think we are better than the kids think they are," Gray said. "I have more confidence in them than they have in themselves in certain situations." With the win, the Crimson Flashes improved to 12-8 overall and 4-5 in the league. Max Dawson scored a game-high 26 points for Willard, which hosts Bucyrus Wynford on Tuesday in a non-league game before closing out the regular season next Friday at Huron. Trey Paxton added 19 points and Cam Robinson scored 15 points. Edison fell to 2-18 overall and 0-9 in the league with the loss. The Chargers were led by Kayden Bourget with 21 points, while Troy Rutherford added 11 points. Edison hosts South Central in non-league play on Monday before visiting Woodmore on Tuesday in another non-league matchup. They close the regular season next Friday at Port Clinton.
