Beloved law enforcement officer dies

NORWALK — Huron County has lost a well-loved law enforcement officer. Steve Shupp, a recently retired sergeant at the Huron County's Sheriff's Office and New London firefighter, died Tuesday, Feb. 2. Shupp retired from the sheriff's office on Dec. 31 and started work as a probation officer with Huron County Juvenile Court. He also served at the New London Fire Department for 17 years and was a member of the Firelands Ambulance Service. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made. "It is with great sadness and a very heavy heart that I inform you that recently retired Sgt. Steve Shupp passed away this morning," Huron County Sheriff Todd Corbin said online. "We ask that you pray for Steve's family and friends as they mourn the loss of an incredible man." Corbin said Shupp was a "very valuable employee and friend." The New London Police Department posted online that the loss of Shupp is tragic. "Steve was so much more than a fellow crime fighter. He was a friend," the post said. The New London Fire Department also made a post remembering Shupp. "Steve served his community selflessly in many roles. He served this department as a firefighter for 17 years," the post said. "He will be greatly missed. We extend our deepest sympathy and prayers of comfort to his family. RIP brother, we will take it from here."
