John M. Porter

FITCHVILLE — John M. Porter, 76, of Fitchville, died on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2021. Born on Sept. 11, 1945, in New London to the late June (Ault) and Johnson Porter, John was a graduate of New London High School, Class of 1964, and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He built and remodeled many homes in the area, owned and operated the Fitchville Market for over 25 years and loved farming his own farm. John was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, the Fitchville Conservation League, and the Eagles in New London. He enjoyed his cabin in the woods, hunting, farming, sharing sweet corn from his patch and he smoked some mean chicken. John is survived by his wife of 54 years and high school sweetheart, Susan (Riedy), who he married on June 10, 1967; two daughters, Sheri (Ernie) Johnson of Huron and Christy (Tim Foster) Hardy of Fitchville; son-in-law, Mark (Danette Rankine) Hardy of Fitchville; grandson, Matt (Veronica) Hardy of New London; and brother, David (Chris) Porter of Fitchville. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Carol Anne Schaffer. Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 26, 2021, at Eastman Funeral Home, 200 W. Main St., New London. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 27, 2021, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 18 Park Ave., New London.
