Driver injured in accident with ambulance

NORWALK — One woman was injured Tuesday morning when the car she was driving ran into the side of an ambulance on Benedict Ave at the East Elm intersection. Veneranda V. Modic, 71, of Norwalk, was transported to Fisher-Titus Medical Center with minor injuries. The driver of the ambulance, Christopher Akins, 26, was uninjured. The EMT in the passenger seat also was not injured. Modic, who was driving a 2006 Kia Soul, was heading south on Benedict Ave. when her car hit the side of the ambulance, which was heading to a call. The Kia had the green light. "According to statements, the ambulance stopped to make sure traffic was yielding," Capt. Dave Smith said. "When it appeared the traffic was stopped the ambulance, which had its lights and siren on, went into the intersection. The driver of the Kia said she not see or hear the ambulance until it was in front of her." The Kia had disabling damage to front end. The ambulance had minor damage to driver's side. No citations were issued. Police sent the case to the law director for review, Smith said.
