St. Paul to rematch with JFK in Medina

COLUMBUS — Another familiar foe and venue awaits the St. Paul football team this weekend.The Flyers (10-1) will face Warren John F. Kennedy (8-2) in a Region 25 semifinal in Division VII at 7 p.m. Saturday at Ken Dukes Stadium in Medina. St. Paul is the No. 2 seed and the JFK is the No. 3 in the region, which features No. 1 Lucas (10-1) and No. 4 Dalton (10-2) in the other half of the bracket in Wooster.Saturday's matchup is not only the fourth in 15 years between the perennial contenders, but also the second straight meeting and a third over the past six seasons.The game also isn't even the first time the two teams have played in Medina. St. Paul defeated JFK, 26-7, in the second round of the Div. VI playoffs in 2007.Medina is also one of the more familiar stops for St. Paul throughout the years. The Flyers first played there in 1997 and last played there in 2015, and have played at the venue six times total with a 4-2 record.St. Paul — ranked No. 4 in the final Associated Press state poll — advanced to Saturday's game with a 21-14 win over Salineville Southern in double-overtime on Nov. 6 at Contractors Stadium in Norwalk. After neither team scored in the first overtime, St. Paul scored on its second possession, then recovered a Southern fumble to end the game.JFK, which also beat Monroeville in the first round, cruised by Cuyahoga Heights by a 62-28 score to reach a fourth meeting with the Flyers.After losing the 2007 game to St. Paul, the Eagles won by a 48-13 score over the Flyers in a regional championship game in 2016 — also in Region 25 — and then held off St. Paul for a 27-21 win last season in a second round game in Warren.Other notable games include in Div. II Region 6 where No. 6 Olmsted Falls (10-2) takes on league rival and No. 2 Avon (10-2) at 7 p.m. Friday at Strongsville. The Bulldogs are coached by Tom DeLuca, a 1999 Norwalk graduate.In the regular season meeting on Oct. 1, Falls held a 29-28 lead with eight minutes left, but the Eagles scored twice down the stretch of a 41-29 win.In Div. IV Region 14, No. 2 Clyde (10-2) faces No. 3 Van Wert (11-1) at 7 p.m. Friday in Napoleon. The Fliers and Cougars have won the past two Div. IV state championships. In the other game in the region, SBC Bay champion and No. 4 Port Clinton (11-1) will face SBC Lake foe and No. 9 Perkins (9-3) at Strobel Field in Sandusky.The game is a rematch of Port Clinton's lone loss of the season, a 20-19 win by the Pirates on Sept. 3 in Perkins.In Div.
