Record sales tax collection hits lucky 13

NORWALK — Huron County sales tax collection remains strong. In the latest report, released by Auditor Roland Tkach, the county's portion was $1,099,620. The August numbers, which were another record for the month, reflected May sales. That marks 13 straight months of record sales tax collection for the individual month. "Retail sales in Huron County continue to be solid," Tkach said. Mom-and-Pop stores accounted for 27 percent of the monthly total, while big-box stores made up 25 percent. Internet sales were at 17 percent and vehicle sales 25 percent. "That's a very positive number for car sales," the auditor said. "I'm really happy to see that." Liquor sales were down about 16 percent compared to a year ago. The county also received the newest casino fund report from the state. Huron County's third 2021 payment was $221,588, bringing the total to $569,148 for the year. The 2021 estimate for casino funds was $600,000, with the county set to receive one more payment this year. "The $221,588 was the best-ever month for casino funds for the county," Tkach said. Huron County has received casino funds since 2012.
