New London board supports LifeWise Academy Program

NEW LONDON — The board of education at its Monday meeting adopted a resolution in support of the LifeWise Academy Program, a Christian-based educational program for students. It will cost the district nothing but students will be allowed to attend during the school day, and a place is needed for the program. The director of the New London LifeWise committee, Buddy Workman, appeared before the board to discuss the possibility of obtaining a parcel of land now belonging to the district for a LifeWise building. Superintendent Brad Romano said there are many questions to be answered before any actions are taken. These would include choosing a parcel that would not impact school activities, zoning issues and other matters. Romano reported the state budget passed the end of June is changing the formula for school funding significantly, and he and the treasurer are still studying the details. He added, however, "We will receive a small bump in state aid for next school year and a smaller amount in the following year, so we are coming out slightly ahead." He also said the roof and paving work are on schedule and will be finished in time for fall sports and school. He then gave the board a list of proposed membership rates for the use of the weight building when it is opened up as a community fitness center. Elementary teacher Kayliann Schwinn's resignation was approved and Britini Hull, Jessica Jordan and Lisa Hauke were hired as certified staff on one-year contracts. Tim Eden was appointed varsity wrestling head coach. The board approved student fees and other routine actions.
