Eagle Creek duo seventh at PGA Pro-Assistant tournament

AKRON — Make that three-time Ohio Open champion. Bob Sowards, of Dublin, followed his fifth place finish in the nationally-televised PGA championship last weekend at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Okla., with a third straight Ohio Open title this week. The best in Ohio played the water-logged Firestone Golf Course on Tuesday and Wednesday. Sowards, 53, led by three strokes after the first day and then kept pulling away on Day 2 despite long rain delays that saw many players leave the course, never to return. Sowards eventually won by seven shots over Pepper Pike Golf Club pro Rob Moss. He won the top prize of a purse of $2,500 at the 36th annual Michelob Ultra-sponsored event. The best finish from an area pro was by Plum Brook's Director of Golf, Eric Morgan. He opened with a anything-but-great 81 on the first day, which had him tied for 77th. But on Day 2 he brought it back to a rock-solid 73 to finish in the top 50. Both Eagle Creek players, Roger Tolley, Willard, and Rod Bordman, Norwalk, shot themselves out of the tournament on the first day, Tolley shooting a 36-39—75 which had him in a tie for 38th. Bordman's card showed 41-43—84 numbers, a total that had him tied for 91st. Meanwhile, the Northern Ohio PGA Pro-Assistant tournament was held on Tuesday at Sand Ridge Golf Club in Chardon. There was a tie for the top spot, with both teams shooting 8-under 64. Those players, both of who cashed checks of $1,500 were Jason Nausbaum and Kelsey Eberly from Congress Lake (32-32—64) and Mark Bixler and Steve Niland from Kirtland (31-33—64). The Eagle Creek team of pro David Morgan and assistant Dustin Roth tied for seventh place, shooting 36-32—68 (-4). They split $425. Morgan, the Plum Brook Country Club pro and assistant (Cody Martin) tied for 15th after carding numbers of 34-35—69 (-3). They split $62.50. Edison Booster scramble July 31MILAN — Registration is underway for the 29th annual Edison Charger golf scramble, which will be held at 8 a.m. on July 31 at Thunderbird Hills South golf course.There will be over $1,000 in prizes for the scramble, which has an $85 entry fee for those 18 and older. Golfers will receive a complimentary sleeve of golf balls and tees, 18 holes with a cart, 50 percent off driving range privileges and an optional Skins game and a putting contest.
