Commissioners return to chambers

NORWALK — The Huron County commissioners discussed senior services, county projects and state funding Commissioners have now returned to the board's chambers after having to move meeting locations due to COVID-19. During Thursday's meeting, commissioner Terry Boose said the county's senior services are planning a picnic on June 15. He said the event will be held outside, weather permitting. "It'll give a chance for seniors to get back together," he said. "A lot of different services will be there. Hopefully, getting people out there and have an opportunity to see some of those services that are provided." The commissioners are also considering an electronic sign outside of the county administrative building. Another county employee has been considering getting a sign and already has money allocated. The sign would be used for public service announcements and county happenings. Commissioner Joe Hintz said a sign could be "a distraction to a driver" and safety is something to consider. Pete Welch, building and grounds supervisor, and the commissioners also discussed an issue at the old landfill. A group of geese has made the landfill home, bringing issues along with them. Different ideas for a solution were discussed but nothing has been decided yet. Welch also provided an update on projects the county is planning, like repaving the county's parking lots. He said their contractor is finishing a job this week and should have a better idea soon when the work will start. The commissioners are planning to order 25 county flags. They will also be dedicating time to work on the Recovery Act moving forward. Boose said while the county has money for broadband infrastructure, the state's budget is still not clear about funding. He suggested inviting Rep. Dick Stein (R-Norwalk) to discuss the changes about broadband funding from the state.
