TRACK AND FIELD: St. Paul boys finish district runners-up

GIBSONBURG — The St. Paul boys track and field team finished as district runners-up on Saturday at the Division III Gibsonburg High School site. Hopewell-Loudon won the meet going away with 146.5 points, followed by the Flyers (76), St. Mary Central Catholic (73) and Western Reserve (71.5) rounding out the top four teams. The top four placers in each district event advanced to the regional championships, one step away from state. The regional meet will be held at Frost-Kalnow Stadium at Columbian High School in Tiffin at 4 p.m. Wednesday and 5 p.m. Friday. Caleb Schwan won the 400-meter dash for the Flyers on Saturday in 53.54 seconds. Ethan Nolan was third in the same event in 54.17. Also placing third for St. Paul individually was Ian Deeter in the 1600 (4:41.64) and Gavin Ross in the 3200 (10:42.91). Also moving on for St. Paul was Sam Scavuzzo in the 200 (24.25) and Ryan Gross in the 800 (2:08.88), who each placed fourth. The 4x200 relay of Schwan, Alex Wynn, Gabe Bond and Scavuzzo placed third (1:37.05) and the 4x400 team of Schwan, Nolan, Deeter and Isaac Thimke was also third (3:40.85). The 4x100 relay of Alex Stine, Alex Wynn, David Forrest and Gabe Bond placed fourth in 48.4 seconds to also advance for St. Paul. Nick Centa was fifth in the 800 (2:11.41) and Sebastian Gomez was seventh in the 3200 (11:24.52) to also score points for the Flyers. For Western Reserve, the 4x200-meter relay of Jonathon Fisher, Aiden Beck, Aiden Edwards and Jacob Jarrett won the event in 1:36.28, while the same quartet was second in the 4x100 in 46.38 seconds. Jarrett won the 300 hurdles (42.24) and was second in the 110 hurdles (15.95), while Fisher was second in the 200 (23.39), Beck was fourth in the 300 hurdles (44.12), and Brayden Taylor was tied for fourth in the high jump (5-feet-2). Also scoring points for the Rider boys was Beck placing fifth in the 110 hurdles (17.93), Sean Murdock was sixth in the 1600 (5:01.11) and Logan Rogers was seventh in the 400 (57.74). Monroeville advanced the 4x100 relay on Saturday, as the team of Trevor Schafer, Blake Schaub, Owen Wadsworth and Duncan Steward finished third in 48.26 seconds. Schafer advanced in the 100, placing fourth in 12.12. Also scoring for the Eagles was Zeb Schafer in the discus throw (108-feet-3) and Gabe Howell in the high jump (5-feet-2), who both placed seventh. The 4x200 relay of Meritt Key, Steward, Schafer and Schaub took seventh in 1:42.41. On the girls side, Monroeville finished sixth with 37 points in the 17-team field. Braylee Wise was second in the shot put (35-feet-7.5) for the Eagles, while Delaney Giles in the 100 hurdles (16.77) and Stacey Legg in the 100 dash (13.16) each placed fourth. Also scoring points for the Eagles on Saturday was Reece Kluding in the long jump (14-feet-9.75), McKenna Dunlap in the 300 hurdles (52.5), and the 4x100 relay of Giles, Madi Clark, Dunlap and Legg, who placed seventh in 52.98. Advancing for St. Paul was Megan Leibold in the shot put and Sarah Matlack in the 400. Leibold, who also advanced in the discus on Thursday, finished third (34-feet-6.25) and Matlack was also third in 1:02.26. Also for St. Paul, the 4x400 relay of Abbie Stine, Ella Wangler, Sydney Endsley and Matlack placed sixth in 4:21.9. For Western, Aliyah Perez moved on in the 800 run, placing third in 2:23.9. Kelsey Lasch also scored for the 'Riders, finishing seventh in the 3200 (13:07.14).
