Camp returning for 4-H

NORWALK — Camp returns this summer for 4-H in Huron County. Haley Evans, 4-H youth development educator, gave updates to the Huron County commissioners about the OSU Extension office and 4-H. All OSU Extension officers are to be completely in-person by June 1, but Evans said the Huron County office has been working in-person since the summer. With recent announcements from the state about health orders, Evans said she hopes more good news follows. Programming will now be able to return, Evans said. Ohio State announced offices can host programs up to 300 people, instead of a 50-person limit. "That pretty much doesn't limit us for anything because most 4-H things don't get up to 300 people," she said. This year, 4-H had 821 members register. Evans said it's slightly lower than years previous due to COVID-19. The future of 4-H is bright, she said, with 165 children signing up. Also looking up are livestock projects at the Huron County Fair. She said many have signed up for projects. Evans said the most exciting plans are for complete, overnight 4-H camps in June. She said the plans were approved by the health department and Ohio State University. "We're going to have restrictions at camp to make it as safe as possible. It's coming up really soon," she said. "I hope we fill up by next week. Camp's really falling into place." The intermediate camp is scheduled June 8-11, junior camp is June 14-17 and a Cloverbud fun day on June 18. Evans said they will be able to take 80 children to camp this year. "We're getting back to normalcy in the 4-H world," she said. "I'm confident that it's going to pull together. Evans said they are also hiring a part-time employee to assist at the office.
