PREP: Monroeville edges Plymouth again ahead of district rematch

PLYMOUTH — Another tight one went to the Monroeville softball team on Friday. The Eagles again edged host Plymouth by a single run, this time a 3-2 final score in a rescheduled Firelands Conference game. Monroeville (22-5) claimed a 5-4 walk-off win over the Big Red (18-8) on May 1 at home, then held them off on the road Friday. The two teams will do it again quickly, this time with much higher stakes when the No. 3 seed Big Red and top-seeded Eagles meet at 4 p.m. Tuesday in a Division IV district semifinal at Shelby High School. The second game features No. 5 Lucas (9-13) against No. 2 Mohawk (18-6). In Friday's game, the Eagles scored in the top of the first as Callie Rosser singled and scored on an error at third base with two outs for a 1-0 lead. The Big Red tied it in the bottom of the fourth, as Jaylin Branham singled after Kaela Plank reached on an error, which set up Ariel Plank for an RBI groundout. Monroeville then scored in the top of the fifth and sixth innings. Three straight singles in the fifth by Adelynn Kradlak, Sydney Meisler and Lydia Landoll loaded the bases.Ariel Plank minimized the damage, allowing just one run on an RB single by Rosser that gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead. Kradlak singled and scored on an RBI single by Meisler in the sixth to make it 3-1, then an RBI single by Mackenzie Back scored Branham to make it 3-2 through six. Both sides were retired in order in the seventh. In the circle, Payton Scheid allowed two unearned runs on three hits with six strikeouts and no walks in seven innings. Kalli Sowers doubled for Willard, which finished with an 6-18 record. Savannah Rodriguez singled for the other hit for the Flashes. Ferber was a perfect 5 for 5 with two doubles, a home run and eight RBIs as South Central improved to 12-10. Sam Seidel was 1 for 3 with three RBIs and scored three times, while David Lamoreaux singled and had two RBIs, and Shane Vanderpool singled with one RBI. On the mound, Blaine Wheeler started and pitched the first four innings. He allowed three earned runs on three hits with four strikeouts and three walks on 68 pitches. Ferber pitched the final two scoreless innings in relief, striking out four with no walks. S. Edison had five different players each hit a single, including Bryce Michaelis, Dominic Dymond, Clint Finnen, Brady Barker and Xander Danner. Luke Bissell had the lone RBI for the Chargers, which scored Keegan Smith. Joey Pennell pitched the first four innings, allowing an unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Edison is at Perkins on Monday in a non-league matchup before hosting a Division III sectional championship game on Friday against Tuesday's Western Reserve-Gibsonburg winner.
