Three area teams earn No. 2 seeds in district tournament draws

Three area teams earned No. 2 seeds, and each took a bye into their respective sectional championship games as the OHSAA statewide baseball tournament brackets were finalized on Sunday. In Division IV, a pair of Firelands Conference teams who are scheduled to face each other head-to-head to decide the conference title this week earned No. 2 seeds. At the Div. IV Clyde district, St. Paul (17-5) is the No. 2 seed behind No. 1 Hopewell-Loudon (18-4), who edged the Flyers in a 1-0 game on an unearned run back on March 30 in Bascom. Meanwhile, Plymouth (11-6) is the No. 2 seed at the Div. IV Galion district, while Edison is the No. 2 seed at the Div. III Shelby district. At Clyde, both the Flyers and Chieftains took first-round byes and will host sectional championship games at 5 p.m. on May 20. St. Paul awaits the winner of a May 18 sectional semifinal between No. 9 Oregon Cardinal Stritch and No. 8 St. Mary Central Catholic (5-13). Hopewell awaits the winner of No. 11 Danbury (2-15) and No. 7 Old Fort (6-10). Other sectional semifinals on May 18 in the Clyde district includes No. 13 Monroeville (0-16) at No. 4 Fremont St. Joseph (16-8); No. 12 Vanlue at No. 5 Toledo Christian; And No. 10 Arcadia at No. 6 New Riegel (12-10). The Monroeville-SJCC winner and the Vanlue-Toledo Christian winner will meet head-to-head at the higher seed's home field at 5 p.m. May 20. The Arcadia-New Riegel winner heads to No. 3 Tiffin Calvert (15-5) for a sectional title game. The district semifinals are scheduled for 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on May 26 at Clyde, with the two winners coming back at 5 p.m. on May 28. The Clyde district winner advances to the regional semifinals at Strongsville to face the winner of the Fairport Harbor district, which includes Jackson-Milton and Lake Center Christian as the top two seeds. At the Galion district, Plymouth awaits the winner between No. 12 Mansfield Christian and No. 5 Lucas at 5 p.m. on May 20 in its sectional title game. Should the Big Red face the Cubs, it would be a rematch of a 5-3 win by Plymouth at home on April 15. The top seed at Galion is Sycamore Mohawk (14-8), which also has a bye and awaits the winner of No. 11 Upper Scioto Valley (2-15) and No. 7 Carey (9-12). South Central (10-9) earned the No. 3 seed and also has a bye into a May 20 sectional title game, where it awaits the winner of No. 8 Buckeye Central (9-15) and No. 9 Dola Hardin Northern. Also in the district, No. 10 Mt. Victory Ridgemont (4-12) travels to No. 6 Arlington on May 18, with the winner advancing to face No. 4 Crestline. The district semifinals at Heise Park are scheduled for 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on May 26, with the two winners returning at 5 p.m. on May 28 for the title game. The Galion district winner advances to the regional semifinals at Patrick Henry in Hamler, where it faces the winner of the district also at Hamler. The top two seeds in that district are Kalida and Miller City. DIVISION II Norwalk-Perkins III set Another third meeting is set between two SBC Lake Division rivals in the Div. II Fremont district. With just 10 teams in the district, both No. 4 Norwalk (13-10) and No. 5 Perkins (12-8) placed itself into a head-to-head sectional championship game, slated for 5 p.m. on May 21 at Norwalk High School. The Truckers and Pirates have met frequently over the years in the tournament, including the last time there was one in 2019 when Norwalk won at Perkins in a sectional title game. This season, the away team won each meeting. The Pirates claimed a 5-3 win on April 7 in Norwalk, and the Truckers won 8-5 on April 26 at Perkins. SBC Lake champion Vermilion (16-5) is the top seed in the district and has a bye. The Sailors will host the winner of No. 10 Port Clinton (7-13) and No. 9 Sandusky (7-11) at 5 p.m. on May 21 in a sectional title game. Shelby (15-2) earned the No. 2 seed and also has a bye. The Whippets will face the winner between No. 11 Mansfield Senior (3-13) and No. 8 Bellevue (8-11). SBC Bay champion Huron (17-6) is the No. 3 seed and awaits the winner of No. 7 Clear Fork (9-9) and No. 6 Clyde (12-9) in another sectional title game on May 21. The district semifinals are scheduled for 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on May 27, with the two winners returning for the title game at 12 p.m. on May 29. The Fremont district winner advances to the regional semifinals hosted at Carter Park in Bowling Green against the Bluffton district, which has Lima Shawnee (14-5) and Tiffin Columbian (13-6) as its top two seeds. DIVISION III Edison earns No. 2 seed at Shelby The Chargers (12-8) took a bye and will host a Div. III sectional title game at 5 p.m. on May 21 in Milan. Edison awaits the winner of No. 12 Western Reserve (5-16) and No. 7 Gibsonburg (9-6), which will be played at 5 p.m. on May 19. Other sectional semifinals on May 19 include No. 11 Willard (5-17) at No. 5 Elmore Woodmore (11-8). That winner advances to face the winner of No. 9 Margaretta (7-7) and No. 5 Seneca East (11-8) at the higher seed's home field on May 21. No. 14 Bucyrus (3-19) travels to No. 6 Oak Harbor (9-11), with that winner advancing to face No. 1 seed Colonel Crawford (21-0). No. 13 New London (3-11) visits No. 3 Bucyrus Wynford (13-10) and No. 10 Crestview (7-10) travels to No. 8 Genoa (7-10) — and the two winners will meet at the higher seed's home field in a sectional title game on May 21. The district semifinals are scheduled for 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on May 27 at Shelby High School, with the two winners coming back for the title game at 12 p.m. on May 29. The winner of the Shelby district advances to the regional semifinals in Elida against the Defiance district winner. The top two seeds at that site include Defiance Tinora and Toledo Ottawa Hills.
