Monroeville voted top seed in Division IV Shelby district

SHELBY — The Monroeville softball team earned the top seed at the Division IV Shelby district on Sunday as the statewide tournament brackets were finalized. The Eagles (15-4) have a first-round bye and will play host to the winner of No. 11 New London (0-15) and No. 10 Vanlue in a sectional championship game at 5 p.m. on May 13 at Clark Park. The Wildcats travel to Vanlue for a 5 p.m. game on Monday. A familiar tournament opponent to the Eagles is the No. 2 seed in Sycamore Mohawk (14-4). The Warriors and Eagles met in the district semifinals over three consecutive years from 2017-19. Mohawk won 9-2 and 10-3 in 2017 and 2018, then the Eagles claimed a 9-5 win in the 2019 district semis en route to a regional title game appearance. This season, the Warriors also took a first-round by and await the winner of Monday's game between No. 12 Mansfield St. Peter's (0-12) and No. 7 South Central (7-10), which is set for 5 p.m. in Greenwich. Also in the district, two other Firelands Conference teams also have byes into sectional championship games on May 13. Plymouth (12-7) is the third seed and will play the winner of No. 9 Buckeye Central (3-16) and No. 6 Crestline. St. Paul (11-12) is the No. 4 seed and will host the winner of No. 8 Seneca East (5-110 and No. 5 Lucas (5-11) in a sectional title game at Norwalk Area Contractors Park. As the No. 3 seed, Plymouth elected the Monroeville half of the bracket. Should both teams win, a third meeting would be in a district semifinal at Shelby High School at 4 p.m. on May 18. The Eagles topped the Big Red on a walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh inning, 5-4, on May 1 in Monroeville. The second FC meeting between the two is currently scheduled for May 14 in Plymouth. The other district semifinal game will be at 6 p.m. on May 18. Conversely, should Mohawk and St. Paul each advance, it would be a rematch of a doubleheader sweep won by the Warriors by scores of 9-3 and 13-8 on April 3 in Sycamore. The two district winners will then play for the championship at 5 p.m. on May 21 back at Shelby. The winner of the Shelby district will make the trip to Leipsic on May 26 to play in a regional semifinal game against the winner of the Bryan district. The top two seeds at that district include No. 10-ranked West Unity Hilltop and Defiance Ayersville. Truckers get rubber match vs. TC In Division II, Norwalk was voted the No. 8 seed in the 11-team Willard High School district. On Tuesday, the Truckers (7-10) will travel to No. 7 Tiffin Columbian (11-10) to face the Tornadoes for a third time this season. In the first of two SBC Lake Division games on March 31 in Tiffin, the Tornadoes held a 6-4 lead in the fifth inning, then scored nine runs for a 15-4 win in six innings. The rematch played out similar in favor of the Truckers on April 19 in Norwalk. The Truckers held a slim 3-2 lead in the third, then quickly pulled away for a 14-4 win in six innings. The winner of the third meeting will visit No. 3-seeded Clear Fork (12-7) at 5 p.m. on May 14. Lexington (16-4) is the top seed in the district and awaits the winner between No. 11 Galion (0-15) and No. 4 Ontario (9-9). Bellevue (13-0) is the No. 2 seed and awaits the winner between No 9 Vermilion (6-13) and No. 6 Shelby (10-13). The fourth sectional title game is a battle of Mansfield as No. 10 Senior makes the short trip to face No. 5 Mansfield Madison (10-10). The four sectional champions will then meet in two district semifinal games on May 18 at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. at Willard High School. The district championship game is scheduled for 5 p.m. on May 21. The winner of the Willard district makes the short trip to Tiffin University for a 2 p.m. regional semifinal against the Lima district winner on May 26. Lima Bath and Bryan are the top two seeds at that district. DIVISION III Rivals Huron, Edison are top seeds Nearby Sandusky Bay Conference rivals Huron and Edison are the top two seeds at the Div. III New Riegel district. The Tigers (15-5) took a first-round bye and will host the winner of No. 11 Bucyrus Wynford (3-17) and No. 10 Willard (5-15) at 5 p.m. on May 14 in a sectional title game. The Royals and Crimson Flashes will play on May 11. The Chargers (14-4) also have a bye as the No. 2 seed and await the winner between No. 8 Carey (7-11) and No. 5 Bucyrus (14-2), also at 5 p.m. on May 14. Colonel Crawford (16-4) is seeded third and awaits the winner between No. 9 Lakota (5-10) and No. 7 Upper Sandusky (12-7) in its sectional title game. Seeded fourth, Ashland Crestview (16-4) also took a bye and awaits the winner of No. 12 Western Reserve (0-19) and No. 6 Margaretta (13-7). Should the Chargers and Tigers meet again, it would be a the decisive pairing as the home team won each SBC Bay Division game. Edison won 5-2 on April 5 in Milan, while the Tigers responded with an 11-0 win on April 22 in Huron. The district semifinals are scheduled for 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on May 19 at New Riegel High School. The two winners then play for the district championship at 12 p.m. on May 22. The district winner will play at 5 p.m. on May 26 in a regional semifinal at Elida High School against the Central 1 district winner. The top two seeds at that district include Cardington-Lincoln — ranked No. 3 in the latest state coaches poll — and West Jefferson.
