Getting back out there

NORWALK — With summer around the corner and vaccines being administered, people are readier than ever to get out. As exciting as it all is, it's important to still be cautious and stay healthy. Steve Beal, executive director of the Enrichment Centers of Huron County, said transit numbers have continued to climb as the vaccine became more available. "They're getting more comfortable being out, they're less afraid," he said. "We're still encouraging people to watch the CDC guidelines. Do some things, but still keep some caution." Beal said for future programs the center is planning, social distancing and limited numbers will still be in place. Still, for many seniors, the past year has been difficult. Beal said he and his staff have spoken to many seniors who have hardly left their homes this year due to the pandemic. "We're very concerned about the fact that isolation is just not a good thing. People do need to get out and see some other people," he said. "We heard over and over and over again, how this person wanted to get the vaccine because they had not been out of their house, and that was just shocking and saddening to me." Beal said for those starting to get out more, they should take it slow. "You're coming off of isolation where you see nobody, you don't want to feel uncomfortable right off the bat," he said. "We're encouraging people to talk and meet outside, limiting how big their groups are." Beal said it's best to visit with those you've been looking most forward to seeing and to keep groups small. "We're seeing people who find one or two friends and they get together and that way you're limiting your exposure," he said. Beal said for those wanting to start getting out, walking is a great place to start. "Walking is great for you. To keep safe, first off, dress appropriately. This time of year, if you up to Lake Erie it'll be five or ten degrees colder," he said. "A lot of seniors take medication and some can make you much more susceptible to the sun. So sunscreen is important." If you haven't been out walking in a while, Beal said to make sure to watch where you walk. "Sidewalks can change, roots can grow," he said. "As we get older, we lose our reflexes to catch ourselves." Being sure to stay hydrated and dressing appropriately is important to feel well while enjoying the outdoors, Beal said. "Umbrellas come in handy for more than just rain," he said. "If it's going to be super hot, don't go where you're sitting in the beating sun for too long." Beal said at the enrichment centers, they're excited to start interacting more with those they serve, "where people can get together, yet stay apart."
