Another month, another tax record in Huron County

NORWALK — Huron County sales tax collection has set a record for nine straight months. The April report, which reflected January sales, was up more than $200,000 compared to the same time a year ago. The county's portion of sales tax collected in the latest report was $994,298. "I'm very pleased with these numbers," Auditor Roland Tkach said. "Shopping local is such a benefit to Huron County." Internet sales are also a key factor coming in at 18 percent of the monthly total. Sales tax makes up 53 to 63 percent of the county's general-fund budget. Mom-and-pop and big-box stores each accounted for 24 percent of the overall total. Vehicle sales checked in at 18 percent. Liquor sales were up 29 percent compared to a year ago. Huron County sales tax collection is already 8 percent ahead of the estimate for 2021. "This is really a great start to the year," Tkach said. For nine consecutive months, the county has set a sales tax record for that particular time period. "That is truly amazing," the auditor said. "I want to thank everyone for supporting local retail." The latest report involving casino funds was also just released. Huron County is set to receive $178,423 in the April 30 payment. "It appears casino funds have recovered," the auditor said. Huron County is at 58 percent of the casino-fund estimate after the second of four 2021 payments.
