PREP: St. Paul softball knocks Mapleton out of first place

NORWALK — One day removed from its seven-game win streak ending, the St. Paul softball team impacted the top of the Firelands Conference standings. The Lady Flyers scored three runs in the first and third innings to open up a 6-1 lead en route to a 9-3 win over visiting Mapleton at Norwalk Area Contractors Park on Wednesday. With the win, St. Paul improved to 10-11 overall and 5-5 in the FC. The loss knocked Mapleton (13-7, 8-2) out of first place, now tied with Monroeville (13-3, 6-2) in second behind Crestview (15-4, 8-1). On Tuesday, St. Paul had lost a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning and lost 4-3 on a walk-off hit at Mapleton. In Wednesday's win, Presley Stang was dominant in the batter's box for the Flyers. She finished 4 for 4 with two doubles, a pair of triples and four RBIs. Sammy Lippert was 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs, and Klaire Hickey was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs. Also for St. Paul, Morgan Baxter was 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Mara Lesch was 2 for 3. In the circle, Amelia Rospert allowed three earned runs on eight hits with one strikeout and no walks over her seven innings of work. Reserve COLLINS — The Trojans improved to 6-9 overall and 4-5 in the FC with Wednesday's win over the Roughriders, which was highlighted by a 12-run second inning and a seven-run fourth inning. Nine different players had hits for South Central, led by Sarah Wallen with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. Annie Cook was also 2 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and a pair of runs scored, while Olivia Hudson was also 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored and Ellysia Driver was 2 for 2 with an RBI. Also for South Central, Maddy Prater and Kyrstin Hamons each doubled and drove in a run, while Kaylee Richards, Hannah Ayers and Liz Music each singled and drove in two runs. At first singles, Bryan Sommers fell to Ryan Frazee by scores of 6-0, 6-1. Josh Newhouse defeated Reid Wash at second singles (6-1, 6-0) and Ethan Brown beat Naythan Golden (6-2, 6-1) at third singles. At first doubles, Carson Colahan and Ashton Coe teamed up to defeat Cooper Glazier and Parker Harris (6-2, 6-2). At second doubles, Dylan Peaco and Braden Lloyd beat Caedon Blough and Seth Karnosh (6-2, 6-4). The Truckers (12-5) will be back in action on Saturday at the SBC Lake Division individual tournament at 9 a.m. at Clyde High School.
