Norwalk tops Lima Bath in PBR Spring Classic

DEFIANCE — The Norwalk baseball team scored five runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back in a 6-2 win over Lima Bath in a non-league game that was part of the Prep Baseball Report Spring Classic on Saturday in Defiance. With the win, the Truckers improved to 9-7 overall. Sam Battles led off the game with a double to left field, and Caleb Sommers wasted no time with an RBI single to score him for a 1-0 lead. After an out, Ian Minor walked and Nate Adelman hit a pop fly that was mishandled in left, allowing Sommers to score for a 2-0 lead. Brayson Malson and Isaac Scheel then followed with walks to load the bases with one out. Buddy Baker then followed with a two-run single for a 4-0 lead, and Jesse Cole capped the inning with an RBI double to score Scheel for the fifth run. Norwalk added one run in the top of the fourth, as Cole singled and scored after advancing two bases on passed balls, followed by an error at shortstop on a ground ball hit by Eli Obringer. Four pitchers combined to allow two runs (one earned) on five hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. Baker (one hit, three strikeouts) started and threw the first two innings, then Cole followed with 2 1/3 scoreless innings with one strikeout. In the fifth, Thomas Gfell came in and threw 1 2/3 innings and allowed an unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts, then Obringer recorded the save, allowing one earned run on two hits with a strikeout. The Truckers are at Perkins on Monday in a critical game in the SBC Lake Division standings. Norwalk is 4-3 in the league, two games off the pace of the first-place Pirates (10-4, 7-1). Jude Muenz led the 'Riders (4-14) at the plate, finishing 3 for 3 with a triple, four RBIs and three runs scored. Logan Wiegel also had three hits and had two RBIs, while Kaden Boswell was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, and both Carson Roe and Chris Buchanan had two hits and two RBIs. Matt Jarrett also doubled and drove in a run for Western. Wiegel pitched six strong innings on the mound for the win. He allowed one earned run on three hits with 13 strikeouts and six walks in six innings. Western is at South Central on Tuesday, then will host the Trojans on Wednesday in a pair of FC games. W. Edison, limited to three runs on four hits, got a single and an RBI from Brady Barker and Clint Finnen. With the loss, Willard fell to 4-13 overall. Crawford — ranked No. 3 in the first state coaches poll in Division III, improved to 16-0 with the victory. Austin Adelman doubled and tripled with two RBIs for the Flashes, while Jake Cok was 2 for 3 with a triple and an RBI. Ashton Ames and Isaac Robinson each added two hits with an RBI, while Dylan Thompson also singled and had an RBI.
