BASEBALL: St. Paul wins pitcher's duel at New London

NEW LONDON — Hits and runs were hard to come by in Monday's Firelands Conference game between visiting St. Paul and host New London. But the Flyers made the most of their four hits, as they plated a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning of a 4-1 win over the Wildcats. With the win, St. Paul improved to 11-3 overall and 5-0 in the FC. The 'Cats fell to 3-4, 2-3. The game was a pitching duel between St. Paul's Scotty Adelman and New London's Jacob Shaver. Both pitchers went all seven innings and combined for 30 strikeouts of the 42 outs recorded. Adelman allowed an unearned run on just two hits with 15 strikeouts and two walks. Shaver allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits with 15 strikeouts and four walks. In three FC starts, Adelman has allowed one earned run and struck out 38 batters. "Scotty was outstanding again," St. Paul coach Aaron Fries said. "His numbers speak for themselves. He is averaging over 12 strikeouts a game in conference play and I thought tonight he took it up a notch with his command. He peppered the strike zone all night long. "He had a large number of 0-2 counts, and that usually leads to a long night for opposing hitters — and tonight was no exception." The Wildcats scored their run in the bottom of the first inning after Matt Jarvis singled and came around to score on a two-base wild pitch and an error. St. Paul got that run back in the top of the third, as Adam Baker singled, stole second, then scored on an RBI single by Eli Fisher. The game remained tied at 1-1 until the top of the fifth, when the Flyers again scratched across a run off Shaver. Kaden Maxwell led off the inning with a double, but as Adelman struck out for the second out of the inning, the ball went for a passed ball, allowing Maxwell to come around and score for a 2-1 lead. In the top of the seventh, Maxwell drew a one-out walk, then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He then scored on yet another wild pitch to make it 3-1. Adelman then followed the same blueprint, as he doubled and came around to score on two wild pitches for the 4-1 advantage. "We knew runs would be hard to come versus Shaver," Fries said. "He was as advertised. We did a good job of getting guys in scoring position throughout the night and were able to take advantage of enough of those opportunities to come away with the victory. This was a great way to kick off a busy week of conference play." The two teams will meet again at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Norwalk Area Contractors Park. Simon threw 108 pitches (70 strikes) over seven shutout innings, allowing just three singles to the Rockets while striking out 11 and walking one. At the plate, Clint Finnen was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Xander Danner singled and also had an RBI. Bryce Michaelis added a single and Simon helped his cause with an RBI. O.
