St. Paul completes sweep of Eagles

MONROEVILLE — The St. Paul baseball team completed the two-game sweep over Monroeville on Wednesday in a Firelands Conference matchup at Clark Park. The Flyers put up nine runs over the middle three innings to claim a 13-4 win and improve to 6-2 overall (2-0 FC). "It was another complete victory," St. Paul coach Aaron Fries said. "We got good hitting throughout the game, as we scored in five of the seven innings. I challenged the kids to get off to a better start offensively, and we did just that. Even in the games we have scored a lot, we have been pretty anemic offensively early in games. I was happy to see that turn around." Leading 3-1 through two innings, the Flyers scored five times in the top of the third. Luke Blum hit a one-out triple and Thomas Bocock was hit by a pitch to reach first base. Kaden Maxwell walked, and with the bases loaded, Adam Baker walked to force in a run. Eli Fisher followed with a two-run single, then a bases loaded walk by Scotty Adelman made it a 7-1 lead. Fisher came around to score on a wild pitch before the inning ended. In the top of the fifth, Baker singled and Fisher followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Kaden Maxwell then doubled in both for a 10-1 lead. With Maxwell at third, Tyler Perkins brought him in on a sacrifice fly, and Blum did the same with Adelman to make it 12-1. Needing to score twice to extend the game, the Eagles did just that in the bottom of the fifth. Meritt Key walked and Daniel Smith hit a one-out double for runners at second and third. Austin Nichols followed with a two-run single to keep the game going. Monroeville (0-4, 0-2) scored a run in the bottom of the sixth when Key singled and advanced to second on a base hit by Duncan Steward. He then scored on a two-base error to make it 12-4. The Flyers then closed out the scoring in the top of the seventh when Adelman tripled and scored on a Blum sacrifice fly. Fisher finished 3 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Blum was 3 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs. Baker finished 3 for 3 with an RBI and scored twice, while Maxwell doubled twice with two RBIs and two runs scored. Adelman added the triple and an RBI, and Jaycob Stanley singled with an RBI. On the mound, Perkins went all seven innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on 10 hits with 12 strikeouts and two walks. "Tyler was outstanding on the mound once again," Fries said. "Twelve strikeouts and two earned runs is a quality outing. He has been in a good groove, and that continued today." For the Eagles, Nichols was 2 for 4 with three RBIs, while Smith was 2 for 4 with the double, and Toby Tester had two hits. Monroeville will entertain Lakota beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday for a doubleheader. St. Paul will host Edison at 11 a.m. Saturday in a non-league game at Contractors Park. The game was originally a doubleheader, but is now a single game. "We have some things to clean up, but we continue to improve game in and game out — and that is really important at this point of the season." Clint Finnen was 3 for 4 with a double, an RBI and scored twice for Edison, while Dominic Dymond was 2 for 2 with an RBI and a double. Brady Barker tripled and was 2 for 3 with an RBI, while Thomas Simon added a single and drove in two runs. Keegan Smith went six innings for the Chargers, allowing four earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Jake Cok was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI for the Flashes, while Ashton Ames doubled and scored, and Isaac Robinson singled and drove in two runs. Dylan Thompson also singled and had an RBI.
