Edison adds five more state qualifiers in upper weights

ROSSFORD — The Edison wrestling team added five more state qualifiers for 11 total out of a possible 11 weight classes at Sunday night's upper weight finals at the Division III district championships at Rossford High School. Shadrick Slone (53-3) and Remington Bauer (38-14) each won their respective weight classes at 160 and 170 pounds to pace the Chargers. Logan Lloyd was third at 182, while Gavyn Klima (195) and Jacob Thompson (220) each placed fourth. Also advancing from the upper weights from the area was Monroeville's Daniel Smith (170), who placed third, and St. Paul's Ben Meyer (182), who took fourth. Slone — ranked No. 3 in the Feb. 10 borofanohio.net rankings — breezed his way to four wins at 160. He scored three straight pins in 37 seconds, 1:20 and 28 seconds before scoring a 17-1 technical fall win over Buffton's Kaden Basil in the finals. Bauer, the No. 10-ranked wrestler in his weight, won by a 15-4 major decision, a pin in 2:56 and a 16-4 major decision to reach the finals. He then posted an 8-5 decision over Eastwood's Jimmy Recknagel (45-5) to win the weight class. At 182, the No. 4-ranked Lloyd won in 39 seconds and by 14-4 and 8-0 major decisions to reach the final, where he lost to Archbold's Carson Meyer (46-3) by a 6-2 decision in the finals. Klima (36-21) won his first two matches in 1:57 and in a 3-2 decision at 195, then fell to unbeaten Wyatt Miller (Oak Harbor) by an 8-2 decision in the semifinals. He then responded with a 6-3 decision in the go-to-state match before falling 3-2 in the third place match to Liberty-Benton's Nathaniel DiRe. Ranked sixth in his weight class, Thompson (44-14) won his first match at 220, but fell by pin in 3:36 in the quarterfinals. Taking the long route back, Thompson won by pin (2:05), decision (7-3), and a pin in 4:04 to clinch a spot at state. He lost 8-2 for third place to Otsego's Cade Limes. The No. 11-ranked Smith (27-8) became Monroeville's third state qualifier by claiming two decisions (6-2, 5-4) to reach the semifinals, where he then lost to Recknagel by an 8-4 decision. Down in the consolation bracket, Smith claimed a 7-1 decision to earn a state berth, then won by default to take third place. St. Paul's Meyer (32-12) opened with a pin in 2:56, then lost in 44 seconds to Archbold's Meyer. He worked his way through the consolation with a 17-2 technical fall, and decisions by 9-2 and 8-7 — the last by a point which sent him to state. He was pinned in 2:28 by Crestview's Brier Godsey for third place. Also placing from the area was Plymouth's Colton Sparks, who was fifth at 170. Sparks (26-9) was in the go-to-state match in the consolations, but lost by major decision (11-2) before bouncing back to place fifth with a 15-2 major decision win, which makes him a state alternate should any of the top four be unable to compete next week. The Division III state championships will be held on Saturday and Sunday (March 13-14) at Marion Harding High School.
