Edison snaps 34-game losing streak

NEW LONDON — It took four extra minutes, but it was worth it. The Edison boys basketball team snapped a 34-game losing streak, outscoring the host Wildcats by five points in overtime of Saturday's 69-64 non-league win at New London High School. The Chargers lost the final 13 games of the 2019-20 season, and the first 21 games this season. Prior to Saturday's win, Edison's last time in the win column was a 51-45 victory over Vermilion on Jan. 11, 2020. Edison had also lost 38 of its last 39 games until the victory on Saturday in the regular season finale. The Chargers led 13-10 after one quarter and 26-21 at halftime. They extended that lead to 38-30 through three quarters, only to see the Wildcats (3-15) outscore them by a 26-18 margin in the fourth quarter to force OT. Lincoln Meredith connected on four 3-pointers and scored 17 points for the Chargers, who also got 15 points from Dylan O'Dell, followed by Grant Ott with 11 points and Clay Byington with 10. Grant Heileman scored 25 points and Jacob Shaver had 22 as the two combined for 47 of the team's 64 points. Both teams are in action on Wednesday in sectional semifinal action. The Chargers face SBC Bay Division champion Willard (16-5) for a third time this season back in a Division III matchup at Willard, while New London is at Crestline (12-10) in Div. IV.
