Three area champions at Norwalk pool tournament

NORWALK — Tiffin Columbian controlled the field on Saturday at the six-team Norwalk pool tournament, which included the host Truckers and St. Paul among the competing teams. The Tornadoes totaled 293 points, followed by Shelby (232), Clear Fork (203.5), Norwalk (186), St. Paul (146.5) and Toledo St. Francis (60). Jesse Cole (126 pounds), Casper Caizzo (106) and Aiden Naseman (132) were the individual weight champions for the Truckers and Flyers. Cole opened with three wins by major decision (14-1) and pin (5:32, 1:05) in the pool format. In the semifinals, he pinned Clear Fork's Champ Delancy in 4:26, then defaulted in the finals over teammate Haydn Graffice, who also won four matches to reach the final. Graffice posted wins by pin (4:30, 5:00) and decision (2-0, 7-4). For St. Paul, Caizzo improved to 18-0 as he won by technical fall (15-0), and three straight pins (1:15, 1:49, 1:00) to claim four victories at 106. He is currently the No. 9-ranked wrestler at the weight in Division III according to the Jan. 6 borofanohio.net rankings. At 132, the No. 20-ranked Naseman finished the day with a 5-0 record to improve to 19-0 overall on the season. He won by forfeit, two pins (:51, :49) and two decisions (5-0, 4-2) to win the weight. Also for Norwalk, Kaleb Ruhl (113), Mason Canalis (160) and Ethan Phillips (170) each placed second. Ruhl (11-6) went 3-1 in his weight class, winning by pin in 1:53, 2:27 and 1:20. Canalis (12-7) won three matches in pool by major (16-2) and pin (:28, 5:58), then pinned Columbian's Carson Steinmetz (4:51) to reach the final, where he fell to the Tornadoes' Kesean Jackson. At 170, Phillips (18-1) pinned two opponents in 1:14 and 53 seconds, won by forfeit, then suffered his first loss of the season by pin in 2:32 to Columbian's Brody Conley (21-0) — currently the No. 1-ranked wrestler in the state in Div. II. Phillips entered the weekend ranked 13th in the weight. Placing third for Norwalk was Dylon Gross (195). Fourth-place finishers included Austin Ware (106), Brendon Gross (195) and Jack Wasiniak (220). Dominic Lones (138) and Derik Phillips (152) plaid fifth, while Giraldo Diaz (132) and Gabe Pearce (182) placed sixth. Finishing second for St. Paul was Ben Meyer (13-6) at 182. He won by major (13-4) and pin (1:27, 1:05) in the pool format, then pinned in one minute in the semifinal before falling to Div. II No. 21-ranked Landon Cook of Columbian in the final (2:26). Placing third for the Flyers was Thomas Pearce at 160, while Andy Meyer was fourth (152) and Chase Rospert (138) was sixth. Norwalk is action this weekend beginning Friday at the two-day Ashland Crestview duals. St. Paul is at Northwestern at 10 a.m. Saturday. Eagles fourth at host duals MONROEVILLE — The Eagles went 2-3 in five dual matches at their host Monroeville Duals tournament on Saturday inside the Monroeville Athletic Complex. The Eagles beat Sugarcreek Garaway (48-6) and Centerburg (42-15), and fell to Vermilion (31-30), Dalton (39-29) and Crestview (40-33) — the latter of a matchup of the top two teams in the Firelands Conference. Monroeville had four wrestlers finish 5-0 on the day, including Ashton Homan (120), Alec Homan (132), Hunter Vogus (138) and Seth Stauder (285). Ranked No. 5 in the state as of Jan. 6, Ashton Homan wrestled just once, as he picked up four forfeit victories. He beat Dalton's Bram McCourt, 15-0 by technical fall, in his lone match. Alec Homan — ranked No. 6 in the state — pinned four opponents in 3:04, 1:36, 1:21 and four minutes, and won by forfeit. Ranked No. 8 in the state, Vogus had two forfeits and won three matches by pin (1:16, 1:18, 1:33). At heavyweight, Stauder scored a huge pin in just 58 seconds over Centerburg's Ross Boyd, who entered the match with a No. 4 state ranking. He added a pin in 1:16, a forfeit, and won a 10-6 decision over Crestview's Mitch Cline. Also for the Eagles, Brayden Schuller went 4-1 at 160 with four pins in 1:22, 1:33, 3:14 and 3:58. At 126, Mickolas Takacs finished 3-2.
