Jack A. Harpst

Jack A. Harpst passed away peacefully Dec. 26, 2020 with his loving wife at his side. Jack was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He was a gentleman and had a kind word and smile for everyone. Jack was born July 20, 1936 in Sandusky to the late LeRoy and Cleo (Schnell) Harpst. Jack and his wife, Carol, would have celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary on Dec. 30, 2020. Jack graduated from Sandusky High School, where he excelled in sports, lettering in football, basketball and baseball. He attended Mount Union College in Alliance and continued his education and football career. Jack was a member of the Alpha Ta Omega fraternity. He retired from a long career in banking and sales. Jack played golf, bowling and softball in his early years and later enjoyed reading, antiquing, gardening, attending live plays and wintering in Florida with his wife. Most of all, Jack was the Patriarch of summer parties at their cottage in Huron. Jack and Carol attended St. Anthony Catholic Church in Milan. He was a former member of the Elks Lodge #285 in Sandusky and a life member of Eagles Aerie #711 in Norwalk. Jack was a former volunteer at Providence Hospital and Fisher-Titus Medical Center. Jack is survived by his loving wife, Carol (Perry) Harpst; children, Susan (Gary) Lewis of Huron, William Harpst and Laura (Larry) Merrick, both of Sandusky, Julie Malloy and David (Stephanie) Harpst, both of Florida, and Jacqueline (Mark) Sindlinger of Norwalk; and special grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Donna Ahner and a son, Daniel. Friends may call from 1:30 p.m. until time of prayer service at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 31 at Evans Funeral Home, 314 E. Main St., Norwalk with Fr. Francis officiating. The use of face masks is required and social distancing will be observed. A celebration of Jack's life will take place at a later date with a Christian Mass at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Milan. The family would like to thank the staff of dedicated nurses who took good care of Jack throughout his declining health.
